Shadows

Sat here on the bed as a single lamp provides enough light to let the shadows grow
Creeping up the walls and as silent as death stalking the night
The room is cool from where the winter winds blow through the open window

All alone in this room, all alone less the friends who call out to the lonely
The voices that whisper from the corners of the room
The soft-spoken sounds that reach out and comfort you

"You do not need anyone, you are better alone"
The words should seem wrong, but after so long they do not
"We are your friend, we will keep you safe"

The simple tone comforting as it speaks those words
Hurt from the past rising inside of your chest
The pain of loss and the pain of not being good enough

"Stay here with us, yes stay here with us"
The whispering takes your mind from that pain as you sit back on the bed
"Never leave us, well never leave you"

The conflict rises inside as you try to recall the good times
Struggle to find something better than the pain you have known
Eyes closing as you let the shadows speak their reassurance once more
