When I was a kid the natives would drive by our farm on their way south to pick sugar beets. They didn't always plan their trips so well and it wasn't unusual for 2 or three cars a day to have run out of gas not too far from our house. Dad would buy extra gas the week before the expected migration and Mom would bake bread and keep extra milk so when they spotted a car they could give them some gas and food and send the people on their way.

@hippyjoe1955 yeah that’s how you do it. If someone is really needy they’ll work for the money and it’s cash money at that. Only an hour and it wouldn’t kill them but they want it handed to them like they are a spoiled child.

@cherokeepatti I am sure he made more money per hour panhandlng than he would have made working for me for that 1/2 hour. One news reporter did an experiment. He took a kettle and sat on a street corner in the party place in town. He didn't say a word but sat with his kettle beside him. The next day he donated over $300.00 to a local charity. He couldn't believe how much money was available for someone like himself who simply sat on a corner with a kettle.

@hippyjoe1955 Yeah knew a man in Santa Monica who would see the same man every day holding a sign near an exit ramp. One day he approached him and offered him a job weeding his flower beds and told him his wife would make him lunch before he did it and if he worked about an hour he would pay him $30. The panhandler looked at the man and replied “Why should I do that? I can make a lot more money standing here holding a sign than I can working.”

I figure if people can pan handle wherever they please, then I made myself a sign to stand beside my vehicle with incase this happens.
All jokes aside, I am sorry about the person you knew that had this happen. I would of took them a 5 gallon can of gas myself.

I wouldn't do that and really don't care for people with hidden agendas.
I've helped people before knowing they were broke and filled their gas tank.

@eyeno Yeah manipulation is a narcissist’s favorite tool to get what they want

@cherokeepatti yes truth, I've been used to many times to count, though I'd still help but that would be the last time they'd see me around or answer their calls.

No. I’d tell them I ran out of gas, and have no money to buy any. I always use a credit card to pay, so I don’t carry cash. I’ve had people call us (when I was married), and ask us to buy gas for them.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Carissimi well this one feels entitled and has been told to get a job instead of having her overdraws getting covered several times a week and blowing through a big wad of cash every month and still isn’t budgeting her money. At that age if I didn’t have cash I would save the gas for work and not run around till I got paid. She’s still playing games

We do that before we run out of gas
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Nanori Before but you don’t pretend to have car trouble to manipulate someone to come over to “fix” it and then find out the tank is on empty, and have to go to a store and buy a gas can & bring back gas to put in it to take it to the gas station to fill it up. And then lie and say she just put some gas in it and pretend it just evaporated or something.
