Is it weird to ask someone which one of their family members died?

I have a coworker on my team who has been out due to bereavement. I was asked to sign the card, so I did.
I wanted to ask the person who presented me the card to sign who died, but I didn't.

Is it weird or would it be hurtful to ask the person who they lost?
I know it must be someone close since you can only get time off for a close family member.

- socially awkward person

You were asked to sign the card. Seems to me you have a green light to open a conversation with your co worker, offer condolences, etc.

I don’t think so

I don't think it would hurt to ask. Of course if it were me I would not care enough to ask who died. I would probably just sign the card just going through the motions.

You can ask like - What had happened ?
Instead directly asking , Who died ?
Not who one , but any one , for whom they are crying it .

You can always check out the obituary.

All you can do is just be there really.

Its ok to ask. I wouldn't mind if someone asked me. It shows that they bother to think about me.
