What defines who you are?

I read today that our actions don't define who we are. So what does define who we are if not our actions?
AllAboutLaffs · 70-79, M
@AbbySvenz This is true !! ... 😋
QueenOfTheNerds · 41-45, F
Intentions, maybe? But actions are usually pretty clear.
SW-User
Not sure I fully agree with that
Nature-thoughts-intention-action or inaction

Whoever wrote that sounds like a self-centered narcissist who doesn't want others to define him/her. Others define us -- rightly or wrongly -- and what else could they define us by than our actions?
Carissimi · 70-79, F
Actions can be misleading, although they are very important guide posts. Our perceptions of another’s actions can also be erroneous. @dancingtongue
dancingtongue · 80-89, M
@Carissimi Others can misread our actions, I agree. But unless our actions support our thoughts and words, they can reveal our own self-deceptions.
morrgin · F
@dancingtongue you deserve a celebratory dance☺️

The culmination of what I was taught and life experience.
Melpomene · 22-25, F
Actions mostly but I'd add intentions, thoughts, habits, choices, skills (or lack of them) etc.
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
@Melpomene the law also recognizes intent , not just the action.
Melpomene · 22-25, F
@AthrillatheHunt Ofc, it's not the same whether you killed someone on accident, in self-defense or planned it
kodiac · 22-25, M
I think it's our reactions that define us.
QueenOfTheNerds · 41-45, F
@kodiac I agree with this so much.
kodiac · 22-25, M
@QueenOfTheNerds Seems like the only thing i can control the rest is random .
SW-User
Your thoughts.
@SW-User Very different to think it vs do it, literally legal differences
morrgin · F
@Stillwaiting I think everyone would be in jail
nowic2 · 61-69, M
If not actions, maybe attitude. But it seems to me actions are reflected by attitude, behaviour, personality etc. So I would have to disagree with the premise. It seems it's just a way to diminish poor behaviour.
morrgin · F
@nowic2 I think you got it exactly right
Carissimi · 70-79, F
I think it may be our intent. We very often act against our own will. Going a bit deeper, the intent of our heart, and it’s purity, once we peel back all our insecurities and hurt. I’m not sure.
I don't know. Your actions are what defines what's important to me about you. Doesn't matter much what you MEANT or WANTED to do.
morrgin · F
@Mamapolo2016 thats what I thought as well
MiserableAtBest · 18-21, F
Our actions are a direct reflection of our character, intentions coming in second place.
Who the fuck said that?
morrgin · F
@MiserableAtBest a quote by Justin Bieber supposedly and it was posted by a diagnosed narcissist on their Instagram
scorpiolovedeep · 46-50, M
Our life experiences…. reading , listening , interaction with people / nature / spirituality , observation , moments , memories …. I think
Iwillwait · M
Your thoughts, the true you is hiding underneath, with a very different dialog. That's the real you.
SW-User
Maybe not your past actions or mistakes, they shouldn't define you to become a better person .
Oh pfft🤔

I wrote a long winded reply about actions, but then got thinking...

And I think its our choices that define us .

What we choose to say
What we choose to do
How we choose to be .
SW-User
Actions do define you ...but you get to choose how you are defined
These cancel culture and SJW mfrs seem to think they do

morrgin · F
@antonioioio would you say our personality is reflected in our actions?

@AthrillatheHunt that reminded me of a scene on Night at the Museum when the Roman guy says " We may be small, but our hearts are large - metaphorically speaking"
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
@morrgin those Romans had more wisdom than the Greeks. Lol

Experiences in life and the way you are raised.

I don't agree with that premise. Actions define who you are.

Thoughts and ideas are all good and well but they mean nothing without corresponding actions.
