Liberalism? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ
SW-User
@BlueMetalChick oh yes. Social liberalism.
In my place, liberal is bad word to them.

@SW-User I'm an ESL. Serbian is my first language and in Serbian, words have very strict and specific definitions, so I often end up looking like a word stickler when I speak English lol
SW-User
@BlueMetalChick I understand that. Not mention English has various, slangs and idioms going to give us headache.

@Blaaah I have been promoting a similar idea for years but in a much less serious sense. I cite the concept of making oneself unique whenever I see annoying self-depreciating memes posted to social media about how the OP is different because they're "not like everyone else" doing normal and healthy things.

I can totally understand that. It is a little bit cringe at times @tommo11
Torsten ยท 36-40, M
tired of hearing about it. You should love who you love but other people don't need to keep hearing about it and having it shoved down our throats constantly
Torsten ยท 36-40, M
@BlueMetalChick never heard of that show but it seems like people who write shows and comics and so on just want to put forced identity politics first and a story second. it comes of as unnatural and forced and cringy as hell.
though I did recently watch a Netflix show called "I am not okay with this" and that had some lgbt stuff in it but it was well written and didn't seem like it was put in there to force anything on anyone but in there because it was a key part of the story.
If it all wasn't so forced, I think people would be so much more accepting but for now it is just embarrassing for the most part
BlueMetalChick ยท 26-30, F
@Torsten It was a very tongue-in-cheek satirical cartoon show from the 2000's about a world in which children fight against "adult tyranny" such as being forced to do homework or eat gross-tasting healthy foods. They've formed a worldwide organization called the "Kids Next Door" and utilize what they called "2x4 technology" to create amazing feats of engineering from random household objects or discarded waste. It was quite funny and endearing stuff.

@BlueMetalChick sounds pretty good
BlueMetalChick ยท 26-30, F
I have conflicted opinions about it. On the one hand I think it's a good idea to normalize LGBT because, well, it is pretty normal. But on the other hand, it can't be too on the nose or else it seems really forced, in which case it's counterproductive. It's almost like an insult more than anything. Look at Marvel Comics. They recently unveiled a new cast of heroes for the New Warriors reboot, among them a transgender hero named Snowflake. Like, really? You're naming a transgender hero with a word used to insult transgender people. It's like if you wrote a Black superhero and named him Super Nigger.
Torsten ยท 36-40, M
@BlueMetalChick don't forget safe space, the typical overall jock haha
BlueMetalChick ยท 26-30, F
@Torsten THEY EVEN SAID THOSE EXACT WORDS. THE STEREOTYPICAL BIG BURLY JOCK.

Homie has pink dyed hair and matching gauges in his ears, and wears heeled boots. What fucking jock in the world dresses like that?

And then there was their teammate Screentime, the "meme-obsessed super teen" whose brain is permanently connected to the internet as a result of him being exposed to his grandfather's "experimental internet gas" as a child. Experimental internet gas. We have attained peak level or boomerism.

Screentime's superpowers include being able to see virtual maps in real time and the ability to instantly Google any fact. You know who else can do both of those things? Any human being who owns a fucking smartphone.
Torsten ยท 36-40, M
@BlueMetalChick that's why I am making fun of it because the creator is clearly delusional to think that dude is a typical jock haha.
The whole thing is a complete disaster and the downvotes on that mess just prove it
CestManan ยท 46-50, F
it gets a little much at times.
BlueMetalChick ยท 26-30, F
@CestManan It does get a little bit much. It only works if it's natural, like you're not TRYING to go out of your way to say "Hey look we have an LGBT character in our thing!"
basilfawlty89 ยท 31-35, M
I think there is some pandering, but I do think representation matters and as long as they don't tokenize LGBT and actually make well thought out characters I don't see the issue.
BlueMetalChick ยท 26-30, F
@basilfawlty89 Like when they cast a Black girl as Ariel in the Little Mermaid, but kept the rest of the actors the same races as they were in the original Disney film.

Oddly, the same people who defended that decision and claimed it only upset the racist people who didn't want Black people in movies are the exact same people who constantly bitch about "whitewashing" and the casting of White actors in roles of characters that were not White in the source material. Perfect example, the film adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Most of the characters in the cartoon show were Asiatic or Native of some kind, Inuit, Eskimo, Koryak, and so on. And yet almost the entire cast of the movie was White.
basilfawlty89 ยท 31-35, M
@BlueMetalChick yeah. Done properly, representation should be encouraged. Black Panther was well made and had a majority black cast. It wasn't forced or tokenized and actually had well written and well thought out characters.
CestManan ยท 46-50, F
I think they should have a couple like this -

A black man who used to be a white woman married to a white woman who used to be a black man.

Well, that would be the dream of right wing republican christian fundamentalists.
MeowsoliniReturns ยท 51-55, F
Pandering how?
BlueMetalChick ยท 26-30, F
@CestManan Like those latex fetish suits lol
CestManan ยท 46-50, F
@BlueMetalChick Be as it is, but if wonder woman were protrayed as a lesbian, many men would be heart broken.
BlueMetalChick ยท 26-30, F
@CestManan Batwoman was made into a lesbian recently for the recent Netflix series and it bombed so bad. Personally I disliked it because her entire origin story begins with her becoming a superhero because her husband was a police officer who was killed in the line of duty. A lesbian wouldn't have a husband.

I ignore most of current day representations, i aesthetically prefer the olden days of daring flamboyency (spelled that wrong i bet). Was reading some reviews on one of my favorite films the other day - In a Year With 13 Moons, and was taken aback at how strongly people disagree with it based on what it means to be "trans", so for me in that sense the trend is going off a little, taking too personally things that should be seen in a more accurate context. People also do this for films with say a scene with black face and trees messing with helpless ladies (Evil Dead), yep, to summarize my thoughts, folks gotta lighten up!
