What are your thoughts about the LGBT community being represented in the media?

I just think that there is a lot of pandering going on.

@Blaaah why not?

@Blaaah I dunno, why is it so bad to have gay characters in movies or books? I mean it's been that way for how many hundreds of years now. Look at some of the great works of people like Homer. There were a multitude of homosexual characters in the Iliad, the Odyssey, and the Trojan Wars.

@Blaaah personally the pride parade I could do without but, nothing wrong with being gay really
BlueMetalChick · 26-30, F
@Blaaah Gay pride parades are yet another thing I have conflicted feelings about. Like you said, it seems like they're a lot of fun for the people who participate, and I'm all for embracing your sexuality and accepting it. But at the same time, a large part of gay pride parades is supposed to be to normalize homosexuality and show those who aren't convinced yet that gay people should be accepted and not ostracized or harshly judged. And yet when you go to a pride parade, everyone is dressed up in crazy looking costumes, humping each other, pouring beer on themselves, getting drunk and high, and generally acting like freaks. You're not gonna convince people who have reservations about gay people to accept them if that's the image you show them. Then they're gonna think gay people act like that all the time.

@Blaaah I'm inclined to agree. Besides, as an asexual myself, I really have no ability to understand why anyone in the world cares about anyone else's sexuality, whether that be straight, gay, bi, or otherwise. It's not even so much that I accept LGBT orientations so much as I just largely ignore it. Have sex with whoever you wish, so long as they are adults, and give consent, but don't tell me about it. I have absolutely no desire to know.

@BlueMetalChick '' I really have no ability to understand why anyone in the world cares about anyone else's sexuality''

Its not just about that though, its about the infiltration of traditionally female spaces, such as bathrooms, sporting events and even support groups for females who've had miscarriages
BlueMetalChick · 26-30, F
@Jm31xxx Well now you're getting into the whole non-binary thing. I was talking about like straight gay bi etc.

@BlueMetalChick oh right, I read the question wrong. These days, when I see LGBT, I instinctively assume its about trans rights

@Blaaah
I don't believe that because I am bisexual, I have something in common with other bisexual people, as sexuality, in my eyes, is just sexuality.
This is especially well articulated. I use this exact same point often when discussing religion. I'm atheistic but I feel no connection with other atheists purely based on my lack of religious faith, so it upsets me when people accuse me of being part of an "atheist cult."

@Blaaah Do you know BasilFawlty here on SW? He said something to me once about the concept of creating specific groups to separate yourself from others reaches a point at which it becomes so particular that now you're the only member of your group.

@Blaaah I have been promoting a similar idea for years but in a much less serious sense. I cite the concept of making oneself unique whenever I see annoying self-depreciating memes posted to social media about how the OP is different because they're "not like everyone else" doing normal and healthy things.
