Another American idiot attempts to contact the North Sentinel Islanders
Some of you may remember when, in 2018, an American evangelist named John Chau went to North Sentinel Island to attempt to convert the islanders to Christianity. The Sentinelese, an "uncontacted tribe" that has lived on the island in isolation for 60,000 years, are known for violently repelling anyone who approaches them. The island is under the jurisdiction of the Indian government, and it is illegal to approach the island or make contact with the islanders. After landing on the island and attempting to communicate with them, Chau was killed.
Two weeks ago as I write this, a 24 year old Arizona resident, Mykhailo Viktorvych Polyakov, landed on North Sentinel Island on March 29, 2025, bearing gifts of coconuts and cans of Coke. He was later arrested by the Indian authorities. He did not see any islanders, raising the question of whether Chau killed them by transmitting diseases against which they had no resistance.
