When I used to travel frequently between Liverpool (where I was born and grew up) and London (where my parents' families lived and I went to College) I could actually hear my accent change!

I’m from Southern England. My accent is quite RP because my mum wanted me to speak “properly” growing up. I haven’t got much of a regional accent because of that.

I am told that my spoken English is like received pronunciation but with French undertones.
I imagine it owes much to Mlle Dubois who taught English at my school.

Not intentionally !
This a judgement to be made by others, as is the perception of one's accent.
Concerning accents:
When I was staying at my uncle's house in Provence, I found the local accent difficult to understand and needed to listen carefully.
Daniel, the owner of the garden business, whose men brought a tractor to cut the grass in the paddock, had a different accent from other locals.
I asked a neighbour where he was from.
"Sais pas. Du nord." was the reply [Don't know. From the north]
I thought "Calais?"
It transpired that he was born in a village some 40 - 50 km to the north.
Different accent there !

Welsh/RP . . depends on who I am speaking to.

@SunshineGirl
I had to google what RP meant. If I understand the term correctly it means "proper" or BBC English. If RP also includes courtroom English like that used in movies such as Witness For The Prosecution or Love Among The Ruins then I find the surgical preciseness of a cutting interrogation to be one of my favorite forms of humor.

@Snowbelle Yes,the actor who played Mick Dundee back in the '80s did a great job in those movies - which were worldwide hits back then - but of course he pretty much exaggerated the accent to fit the character he portrayed.I've had a few Americans say "good day mate" to me,but it usually comes out something like "good die meet"!
Weird east coast mashup with a touch of southern twang.🤷🏿
hearing it played back to me sounds disgusting to my ears.🙈

Nobody can tell you what their accent is because they can't distinguish it themselves.
If anyone ever tells you that THEY have an accent, that person is faking the accent they are presenting to you.

I know what you want. . . alright, okay... your mention in a PM of the late Snooker player/announcer John Virgo is what got me thinking about accents. 😁
Which makes one wonder how many different English accents and dialects (over 160!) there are throughout the world (like Bermuda, Australia, Pitcairn, mid-Atlantic)
