I think English is the language of commerce because it is flexible, adapting to include other languages. That plus the spread of the British Empire and British trade networks that, together, included most countries of the world.
In the middle ages, Latin fulfilled the same sort of function across Europe, with French being the language of the 'educated' class, because of Classical education and the spread of French speaking Norman knights.
Perhaps another language will supplant English in times to come.

@Pianist12341 I'm not sure if the language of class was useless. It created a common bond so diplomats and the elite could converse with more ease, thus possibly helping avoid wars through mistranslations. (Although there were far too many wars as it was!)
