How easy would it be for you to give up social media completely?

ArishMell · 70-79, M
Probably fairly easy, unless I have become addicted. "Social media" are potentially very addictive.

Interesting question though...

I have enjoyed many holidays of more than two weeks without newspapers, radio or Internet; and with my portable 'phone only for the related social arrangements and available for emergencies. (No TV either - but I do not own a television anyway.) And I have never felt their loss whilst away!!

(At home I rely on the local newspaper and the radio for news etc.)

So I have thought about it from what I use the Internet for.

I use only two general, anonymous ones social sites (SW the more); and will not touch the intrusive, like Facebook, nor the meretricious, like Twitter.

I've accounts with two fora related to my hobbies, and access to club web-sites, but are these "social media"? They are public, but dedicated to specific interests and their discussions almost entirely technical.

.
So I could probably live without the two general sites, which are simply entertaining. Less so the technical sites. Those are genuinely useful as well as interesting, and I have obtained advice or information though them, and helped others in turn, on technical matters.

SW etc. though? I would miss some fellow-users. I would miss the site itself for a while, but probably become accustomed to the loss. Especially as I would achieve a lot more of what I want to do!
.

[Edited to correct second sentence. I had typed "is": the word "media" is of course, plural!)

I already don’t even talk to my sisters anymore .. not that hard.. I don’t like getting close to people anymore anyways

Gave up on fb and insta, only SW remains for now
SW-User
@Boleuskas After what I hear about those sites, I never used them or others like them.

I can give up anything but feel It would be a pity. It's a means of self-expression and nobody is an island.
alan20 · M
@SW-User As a musician I agree with your second sentence. Real people - maybe, but it's often easier to touch the reality anonymously.
SW-User
@alan20 I grow tired of internet realities that equal to harassment, spreading rumors about other people, etc... can't be accused of being other people in daily life. lol
alan20 · M
@SW-User With that I agree entirely.
HikingMan · 51-55, M
It would be an adjustment, that's for sure.
But I could do it and probably would not miss it overly much.

Most everyone on SM platforms that I talk to on a regular basis have an email address for me.
I tend to try and meet people I know or wish/need to talk to wherever they're already at.
Though given the ease of SM message systems like the PM's/DM's here and the Messenger system I use on FB. Social media is sort of a means to an end that I sometimes use to babble, pontificate and rant...

Much of the time...,
I do it in rhyme...

Anyways, I rely more on the functionality of these places more than I do the False Sense of an actual social life....

Peace,
Rob

If I'm being honest I wouldn't like it. It's fun, I joke with friends and relatives and generally enjoy my moments on it. So while I could, I wouldn't want to.
Coletracer · M
easy s pie if not for a few people I like socializing with
SW-User
@Coletracer What I know is that I really don't know 99 percent of the people I see on internet.
I get more out of email and text with a couple I've gotten to know better.
Coletracer · M
@SW-User It is great when you get close enough as friends that a person gives you their e-mail or number. I have a few like that but then there are others that are not there yet.
Dino11 · M
I would miss some people.
SW-User
@Dino11 The ones who really matter would maybe trade emails or phone numbers.
Lilnonames · F
@SW-User after 6 monthes they dont reply anymore but i still talk to a girl from yahoo chats and yahoo answers from 12 years ago
SW-User
@Lilnonames I know many quit after a while, but....there's always a couple that stick with it and those are the ones I keep in mind.

I don't have fb
I'm trying to detach from sw
I just don't want to attach myself to people on here anymore ...with the acception of the friends i already have on here ...they have my info when i do officially leave for good ...
SW-User
I've done it before.
And I am not as invested as I appear to be. I could do it fairly easily. It is the familiarity of logging on compulsively that would need some taming.
Byron8by7 · M
This is the only social media I use. I would miss a few people here, but I could give it up (or if SW shut down) without too much regret.
theAlchemist · 56-60, M
Fairly easy. It's never given me anything of deep lasting value and I've been off of social media at times for over a year.
Steve42 · 56-60, M
very easy. Too easy. Sometimes I actually forget my phone and go to work and don't even miss it.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
Very hard at current situation. I think I'd get lonely and trapped in the cycle of my own thoughts way too much.
TheFragile · 46-50, M
I could do without it. I would be able to stay in contact with the people I wanted to.
SW-User
Very easy I’m not on any of the major social medias. I find them to be rather pretentious.
Very easy, I'd still be able to keep in contact with friends.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
I don't think it would be easy, I depend on FB too much.
Beatbox34 · 31-35, M
I have done that. I am not dependent on it as I once was.
SW-User
Then my solitaire would be complete.
Lilnonames · F
If all social media was set up like this site very easy lol
SW-User
Seems to me that maybe it's the best thing we could do for ourselves when so many of us seem upset and others seem to be depressed with how it all goes online.

@RogueLoner I just don't "get" much out of being on sites like this. I think that's because I'm more of a one on one REAL conversation type person
