Is nostalgia a positive or negative emotion ?

deadgerbil · 22-25
Could be negative. So many people reminisce about the good old days even though their perception of it is completely skewed

If you smile when you reminisce then it’s positive, if you feel sad it’s a negative. I like to focus on the positive. Sure I miss it but for a few minutes it takes me back to a sweet period of time…like hearing the screen door of farmhouses slam shut. That triggers a flood of farm memories for me.

That is up to each individual, because no one has the same past. However, I associate the word "nostalgia" with memories of positive things, and people whom I loved. For me, it is sometimes bittersweet, but mainly sweet.

Nostalgia by definition is fond memories of the past or longing for something from the past. Fond memories are positive for me. Longing for something lost would not be positive. I have friends and relatives who are determined to live in the past, it isn't doing well for then, they seem a little out of touch. I had great parents, had a good time growing up, I look at those times with nostalgia. I grew up in the 70s, I don't want to go back there.

Taken in small doses, it's OK. One can recall pleasant memories, and they may evoke a smile.
But if one dwells too much in the past, it can be depressing, thinking of people and places that are no longer in our lives.
As with most things, moderation is key.
Negitive. The past belongs to a dead man, the future is make believe. The only reality is the second in which you currently exist. No wiggle room.

As I age it's becoming more negative.
