When I was a kid, all of us lined up throughout the school halls, with the line ending at some tables in the gymnasium that were staffed by nurses who gave each of us several (numerous?) life saving vaccinations. They were absolutely mandatory. I think it was some years later, we went through the whole process again, to get "booster" shots. My parents were glad.
