My wife has mild diabetes and she takes metformin, but if she does not watch her diet she will likely progress to the more serious kind where she needs insulin shots. She monitors both the amount of carbs and the timing of her food intake very carefully. She actually has a measuring cup at the table, and she informs me down to the minute when it is OK for her to have supper.

@DrWatson It's used for BOTH things...diabetes AND psychosis. I never saw the ex try to control his sugar or his carbs...and now I am just about convinced that he was taking it for his nutty condition.
DrWatson · 70-79, M
@4meAndyou Ohhhhh....I didn't quite understand what you were asking about, but now that makes sense.

Of course, many people with this kind of diabetes will still not try to watch their diet, because a lot of people have no sense of thinking in the long term.
4meAndyou · F
@DrWatson Well, there is no way for me to know...ever...and I shouldn't care.

No you can't. You still have to stick to a healthy balanced diet .
4meAndyou · F
@SW-User That's what I realized when I discovered, last night, that Metformin can be prescribed for major mental issues...which he had.
SW-User
@4meAndyou My ex used to take it and still ate crap and wouldn't exercise so they got sick .
4meAndyou · F
@SW-User He didn't get sick like that. He just ate and ate and ate.

There are two types of diabetes one of them you need to monitor your sugar levels and take insulin and be careful what you eat. The other is also known as old man’s diabetes as is caused by too much alcohol and not enough exercise. Typically they might occasionally get gout.
4meAndyou · F
@Royrogers Too much alcohol for too many years...and drugs...and overeating, and no exercise. He was being kept alive by surgeries and by his doctors.
Royrogers · 61-69, M
Oh dear that is sad @4meAndyou
4meAndyou · F
@Royrogers It was. He was absorbed with getting buzzed, drinking beer, and eating.
Fntxcple · 41-45, M
I take it for diabetes but still have to be cautious about what I eat or my sugars will be all over the place.
4meAndyou · F
@Fntxcple That makes a lot of sense.
TheRascallyOne · 31-35, M
Yes as long as you're incorporating a good workout eating healthy as much as you can and watching your sugars
4meAndyou · F
@TheRascallyOne I am sorry about that. I am beginning to think that the ex was taking it as a psych med.
TheRascallyOne · 31-35, M
@4meAndyou Lol that won't do nothing for psych
4meAndyou · F
@TheRascallyOne It actually is being used in an off label application for the treatment of schizophrenia and psychosis.
60 mg of carbs at each meal, 15 mg at snacks...check your blood glucose..
get excercise
curiosi · 61-69, F
My stepfather was diabetic on Metformin, ate what ever he wanted.
4meAndyou · F
@curiosi Thank you. That helps a little bit.
no you can't unless you want to end up on insulin. buy a good blood monitor to help you keep your sugar in check. see your doctor regularly and get the bloodwork he orders on time. insurance should pay for the monitor and test strips
4meAndyou · F
@saragoodtimes I am just trying to find out if the ex was lying to me about the Metformin...because it can also be used as a psych drug.
@4meAndyou usual prescription to start is 500 mg twice a day. can be increased to 1000mg twice a day but no more than that. just asked my husband
4meAndyou · F
@saragoodtimes Thank you. I wish I had known about the schizophrenia and psychotic applications of the drug when I could have checked the name of the prescribing doctor.
YMITheWayIM · 46-50, M
My wife uses it for weight reduction. That's all I know about it.
