And they call themselves developed country .
senghenydd · M
@Max41 Now your on the right track I call my country "Silly".

MarkPaul · 26-30, M
I'm not necessarily averse to prescribing liquid paraffin, however I am in favour of it being more regulated to prevent misuse by overeager users. While most people (like yourself) report favourable results, some do experience adverse side-effects and so I think a proper compromise is to make it available, but under guidance.
senghenydd · M
@MarkPaul I agree most of the SW members here don't know what I'm talking about,maybe it's sold under another name in other countries than Great Britain. I totally agree with you care must be taken with this product.

If I search for is liquid paraffin banned in wales this SW post is the second hit on DDG: https://duckduckgo.com/?q=is+liquid+paraffin+banned+in+wales&t=newext&atb=v319-1&ia=web

I can't find any other pages that say it is not available in Wales. What's going on?
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
There are plenty of other remedies for constipation; both over the counter and prescription remedies in chemists as well as things like very strong black tea.

Interestingly Superdrug's website doesn't list liquid paraffin at all. At least neither mineral oil nor paraffin get any hits for products where that is the only or principal ingredient. Similarly for Boots. Lloyds on the other hand does, aren't they Welsh? https://lloydspharmacy.com/products/care-liquid-paraffin-150ml?variant=39727540109375

It’s because the Welsh assembly can’t tell the difference between kerosene and paraffin, and in their desperate desire to be seen as cutting emissions put restrictions on the sale of both..
senghenydd · M
@meJess There's many a joke about the Welsh Assembly I will stop you there and tell you this problem existed long before the Welsh Assembly existed.

Thought I'd add a picture of Smiler.

Neoerectus · M
Uhm ... the reason for the bowel cancer is more likely not constipation. Constipation is often a symptom of a diet not high in fiber, low water intake, high stress, other medical issues, etc.

Modern processed foods mess up gut bacteria which can cause a host of problems. High sugar, low fiber, high salt, etc. are the real boogeymen.
@senghenydd And yeah. That is about as useful as giving yourself a diagnosis from WebMD from googling random symptoms.
Neoerectus · M
@senghenydd Again, anecdotal without professional scientific opinion supported by tech ( tests) is suspect. Constipation,k is usually a symptom of other things.
senghenydd · M
@Neoerectus I've lived with Crohn's disease all my life without Liquid paraffin I would of had a Colostomy it's obvious that Liquid paraffin is being phased out in the UK.
At first I was very very confused because here in Canada liquid paraffin is lamp oil aka kerosene.
@ninalanyon Good to know. Haven't gone through anything like that since high school chemistry class.
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow Same here! The Nuffield A-level chemistry course in senior high school in England in the early 70s was very good. It was my second best subject. A lot of experimental work, very little rote learning. Of course I have forgotten most of the details now, fifty years later. I think I still have one of the textbooks somewhere though.
@ninalanyon I have actually gotten back into it a bit since I started getting into doing my own darkroom work for photography and learning historic processes too.

A friend who went to uni for chemistry is a photographer here too and he is working on safe alternatives to very toxic chemicals used in old photography methods.

What's it for? Getting a difficult stool out?
senghenydd · M
@cherokeepatti Purchasing is usually done from On-line Chemists nowadays, Chemists in my locality haven't sold it over the counter in years in London it's still sold over the counter.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@senghenydd that’s terrible to withhold something healing
senghenydd · M
@cherokeepatti Yes it is terrible to with hold medicine, I struggle I hardly eat any bread and always eat a cereal for breakfast I get by no thanks to local Chemists.

@msros I don't think so
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
Is liquid paraffin the same thing as mineral oil?
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@cherokeepatti I think so. At least mineral oils are principally liquid paraffins but can also have other hydrocarbons it seems. For instance J&J Baby Oil is a mixture of paraffins with a small amount of isopropyl palmitate and some perfume. I imagine it is probably available in Wales but the perfume probably makes it unsuitable as a constipation remedy, unfortunately for @senghenydd.

Can't comment because I've never heard of the stuff. When I saw your headline I thought you were referring to some kind of heating or lamp oil.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
@senghenydd Ex-Lax, Senacot, Dulcalax. Milk of Magnesia, and mineral oil come to mind, along with a host of other brands and types. Shelves of the stuff at the local pharmacy.
senghenydd · M
@ChipmunkErnie I'll give these items a trial.
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@ChipmunkErnie Your mineral oil is probably liquid paraffin.
allygator18 · 22-25, F
i think selling puffins may be illegal
senghenydd · M
@allygator18 I think your right
The question is why it isn't available.
senghenydd · M
@TheSirfurryanimalWales It's always been freely available in London but for some reason it's not available in Wales.
