I see hearts next to names. Is this new, or did I just overlook it before now?

It means you are a VIP. You can choose a little flag that says VIP, a heart, or a star, or no badge at all if you don't want anyone to know you are a VIP.

It's very old. When you become vip you get to choose between a heart a star or a small vip word next to your username.
