Why would people spend so much money on Uber when they can have their own car?

That’s a lot of money to spend going to work and back! Why don’t you lazy, bogus asses learn to drive or take the bus?! Why waste like $1000 a month while you can have your own car?
A coworker takes Uber to work everyday and it costs her about $20-17 dollars a ride to work and back. Depending on the time and how much it is. She lives 20-25 minutes away from our job. LEARN TO DRIVE!
AmmieBell · 18-21, F
Not everyone has the money to buy a car. If you live paycheck to paycheck. you only have smaller amounts of money at a time. That means you may have $30 in a day to take an Uber, but don't have $7,000 all at once for a used car. And BECAUSE they are forced to take transportation that costs money, they are unable to save up for the car. The same applies to groceries- it is actually more expensive to buy things when you live paycheck to paycheck, because buying in bulk is cheaper, but you cannot afford to do so and cannot save p because you need the essentials immediately. And the bus is not available to everyone. Especially if she works early in the morning, or works a second job, or has kids to take care of. Busses can have connection routes where you have to get on several busses to get to work, and ALL have other stops on the way. That means it takes way more time to get there, and if you work in the morning or have to drop kids off at daycare or have a second job you need to get to, a trip that is 20 minutes by car can be more than an hour or two by bus. Thinking you should "just by a car" is a very privledged view on a much more complex situation tbh.
@AmmieBell Exactly!

@Lucyy I agree lol. I see you deal with ignorance the way I do- I am willing to educate, but in a conversation like this where the person clearly just wants to be right, I will not placate ignorance. The whole mindset behind this post is classist and ignorant as hell. so disappointing that even after all this clear explaining and easy to understand logic, they still choose ignorance. People love to hide their prejudice (be it about race, wealth, gender, etc) behind "an opinion".
This post is not an "opinion". It is just blatant ignorance and inaccuracy. Its like me saying "I think people who are homeless are dumb and lazy because they should just buy a house teehee". Its an impossibility, and my "opinion" is my bias and discrimination against those living in poverty.
We need to do better and stop even giving ignorance and bias lile this time of day. This person clearly just lives in privileged and doesn't care enough to try and understand the struggles of poor people, whom they view as "lazy" and beneath them. Stop giving foolishness time of day. Good on Ammiebell for doing her best, but you can't argue with ignorance. Especially the kind of ignorance we seeing this post, which is based entirely on wealth divide and privilege.

@AmmieBell We’ll said! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
People can be so narrow minded and buying a vehicle is very expensive nowadays. Even used cars.
I see what you’re saying but did it ever occur to you that there’s people that can’t afford to get cars or car insurance? That shit cost money. Some take the bus or even a taxi, Uber or Lyft. I usually take the bus, but since my job is 20 or 25-30 minutes away depending on the route, I am taking Uber right now because if I take the bus, it’ll take me almost 2 hours to get to my job so I have to have some way to get to work. No excuses! Eventually I will get my own car and get back to learning to drive one day but for now, I’m just gonna use Uber even though I don’t want to and it cost some money, but it’s the only way I can get to work. When the school year starts I get picked up by the van again, but only in the mornings due to a lot of support staff taking van route roles. I’ll take Uber home in the afternoon, unless someone offers me a ride home or I can carpool with someone but I will be taking Uber. You need to be open minded about this kind of stuff and don’t judge anybody if you don’t know the situation.

@CraftyMarieArts tell her girl!!!! Tell her!!
PetiteJulie01 · 22-25, F
@CraftyMarieArts Who’s arguing?! You’re the one that’s wasting your money on fucking Uber, not me! That was rude what you said that I have no common sense. I understand they may not have another way but get a car and stop being lazy! What do you do, depend on mommy and daddy to drive you around! Quit depending on then!

Your response to people actually giving you facts and educating you prove that you don't actually care about facts, and you just want your "opinion" to be right (tho what you are listing isn't an opinion, it's an impossibility, and therefore not even arguable).

Imma block you cause clearly you have no issue name-calling or discriminating against those in poverty, but just a little tip for you: Next post, you should just say "I hate poor people and live in blind privilege" and leave it at that. We can all see it, anyway, as you would be able to tell if you look outside of yourself and actually analyzed the responses you're getting on your post.
PetiteJulie01 · 22-25, F
@SavannahMay I’m not discriminating anybody! I’m being honest. Whatever block me I don’t care.
ElizabethBabe1994 · 26-30, F
@SavannahMay speak the truth 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Lesulk112 · M
Respectfully this might be the dumbest most braindead take I've ever heard 🤣
PetiteJulie01 · 22-25, F
@Lesulk112 Excuse me?! What is your problem? I was just being honest. Man people can’t handle honesty! 🙄
ElizabethBabe1994 · 26-30, F
Because maybe it’s their only transportation. Did everything about that? Sometimes jobs can be too far in the buses would take longer so sometimes Uber or a taxi is the only way but you have to understand that the drivers are going all the way to drive passengers to where they need to be so the passengers can at least pay to book a trip and tip them because drivers done so much. TIP them! Do NOT BE CHEAP!
Be mindful. These people are doing a lot for the passengers. Don’t be so narrow minded.
PetiteJulie01 · 22-25, F
@ElizabethBabe1994 Ugh so many people keep saying that and I understand but why spend more money on tipping? I mean yes don’t be cheap but come on! Take the bus if you’re so cheap.
ElizabethBabe1994 · 26-30, F
@PetiteJulie01 Well it’s the truth. What I’m saying it’s not being cheap it’s being thoughtful. I mean it’s optional to give them a tip but you should at least tip after what they’ve done. Help them out! Imagine how much gas money they have to put in to take passengers out. To put it bluntly, you sound ignorant and selfish. If you can’t see the truth, then something‘s wrong with you. Not my problem.
PetiteJulie01 · 22-25, F
@ElizabethBabe1994 What do you know about the truth? I’m not offended by the truth so you need to buzz off! Whatever bye
Northwest · M
If this is the US, public transportation options are not easy to come by. In larger cities, IF your commute is within the city, you have the additional problem of parking. In Seattle, parking can run $50+ per day. If you live in suburbia and commute into the city, taking a bus could add 2-3 hours to what's supposed to be a 15 minute ride.

Not a simple choice.

@PetiteJulie01
But why pay so much money when you can buy your own car

Well okay I see you point.

????
ElizabethBabe1994 · 26-30, F
@Northwest what?
Northwest · M
@ElizabethBabe1994 What what?
ABCDEF7 · M
1. You help a cab driver earn his/her living.
2. You can work or talk while commuting. You can make good use of your precious time. If, you consider your time to be precious.
3. You need not to spend lot of amount buying a car, or burden yourself with an avoidable loan.
4. You save on costs and the headaches of maintaining a car.

I have my own car, but don't like the idea of having one. Will soon sell it.

I understand what you mean about the costs , I do agree there , with some people it’s definitely not because they are lazy. I would love to have my own car. At the moment I haven’t even got my full license. I have extreme anxiety that makes just the thought of driving hard for me. I haven’t taken lessons yet. I can’t afford my own car yet , it’s either that or rent an place to live so I’m away from my toxic dad who traumatised me. I’m trying to fund my education and future too. Being in my job , my pay isn’t always going to be the same , some nights I could get thousand , some nights I could get zero , I can’t control that. I can’t just get an normal job , I have many many problems, I’m extremely lucky to be able to do the one I have , even that’s an huge challenge for me. I’m in therapy , most of my money goes on my health , physical and mental , but I would love love love to own my own car and drive it anywhere I want , I would love to not rely on public transport for work.

Down payment, monthly payment, insurance, maintenance, insurance, property taxes (in some places), repairs. For some it’s more economical. And they may just need it for work.
PetiteJulie01 · 22-25, F
Pinkstarburst · 51-55, F
@PetiteJulie01 Some people would rather take an Uber and let someone else deal with all that.
PetiteJulie01 · 22-25, F
@Pinkstarburst whatever
DunningKruger · 61-69, M
She must have her reasons. How does the way your coworker chooses to spend her money (or not) affect you?
DunningKruger · 61-69, M
@PetiteJulie01 It's her money to waste, and affects you not at all.
PetiteJulie01 · 22-25, F
@DunningKruger she’s being wasteful and stupid
DunningKruger · 61-69, M
@PetiteJulie01 Again, this affects you exactly how?
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
Maybe she had a seizure disorder and cannot safely or legally drive a car. Not everyone will tell you their health issues.

I’m ok with someone spending their own money their own way
PetiteJulie01 · 22-25, F
@BiasForAction coming yeah but still that’s wasting about $1000
Pinkstarburst · 51-55, F
@PetiteJulie01 It’s theirs to waste though.
PetiteJulie01 · 22-25, F
@Pinkstarburst Welp their fault not mine. They’re parents are probably diss alone in them
SweetMae · 70-79, F
Buy a car takes a lot of money up front. It isn't easy for everyone.
Peaceandnamaste · 26-30, F
You sound very heartless
Other people's life is not my concern as long it doesn't affect mine negatively.
Maybe can't qualify for a loan
PetiteJulie01 · 22-25, F
@SlippingAway what do you mean?
@PetiteJulie01 if you can't afford to buy a car outright and you have bad credit you may not qualify for a car loan to buy a car
PetiteJulie01 · 22-25, F
@SlippingAway true good point
nacnud · 36-40, M
Depending on the distance she could cycle if there is somewhere to store the bike.
