@Carla EXACTLY! One "lays <something> down" just as a chicken laying an egg (though this is a different verb meaning lol).

One can [u]lay down[/u] a book, a tool, or even a person one has carried (like a child), but one [u]lies down[/u] when one wishes to rest (the old reflexive statement, "now I lay me down to sleep", makes this clear).
