Were you so poor that you got free lunch in school?

I was a free lunch kid. Even if I didn't like the food much that day I ate it anyway because lord knows what I'd have at home

Wasn't such a thing during depression. To our one-room school we took homemade light bread or biscuits or cornbread, usually buttered, with whatever was handy.

@Nelladell I was wondering because my aunt married a German and I thought he came here after WWII, I didn’t want to ask because maybe he had spent some time in the military there, he had a thick German accent and loved beer and other German things. I found out after doing a little genealogy that his mother came from Germany. Apparently he was raised in a household where German was spoken and most likely the farmers in the area the same and he never lost that accent after growing up. That was in central Nebraska.

@cherokeepatti Daddy didn't have an accent, even though he spoke Lithuanian also and had grown up in a home where Lithuanian was spoken. I thought that it was pretty cool.

I didn't get free lunch, we were poor but my dad was too proud to use benefits available. We did without some stuff but we hunted and fished, ate game meat. I never went hungry but beans and cornbread were often the family meal.

The only free lunches when I was in junior was for those who had to help work in the cafeteria gathering and cleaning the trays and loading them in dishwashers. After they worked for a short while they got their lunch. The free lunch program came later.
cameron · 26-30, M
Yes! Free lunch every day throughout all of school. Sometimes you'd get a lot less than people who paid, you could really see that the system didn't care that you were poor, they only helped because they had to.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@cameron wow, the ones who need it most get less

I had free lunch and dinner throughout public university for five years. Amazing. The food wasn't up for a michellin star but it was nice. I remember those years with awe. Painting and arts all day, and a break for free and ready food. It was nice:)

After my mother died when I was on the 4th grade, she was only 42 at the time, I got lunch in school, I remember learning to eat foods I never tried before. I still love kidney beans!

for part of my grade school years, after my parents divorced, i had reduced lunch. it was barely worth the reduced cost, i remember that.
Bri89 · 31-35, M
No, I don't think so. It might have been reduced, I'm not sure. All I know is that I distinctly remember paying for it. So it wasn't free.
akindheart · 61-69, F

Lostpoet · M

No, went to a school where you had to pay. Another, it was provided to everybody.
