There's always a shortage of nurses, unfortunately, not really easy staff to in many places. Surprising really. They need to get the travel nurses on board.
HannahSky · F
@justanothername even through the states which I think they are.. There's exceptions for medical staff..it's been that way, there's just always a shortage.
justanothername · 51-55, M
@HannahSky there are exceptions for medical staff but the degrees of complication between countries is still quite high when you include quarantine travel.
HannahSky · F
@justanothername Doesn't mean they aren't going or asking for nurses. Places like Africa, Southeast Asia, Eastern Mediterranean regions, and parts of Latin America, are in need.. There's a global shortage, not only in the US, which has been short for years and years. Some people are willing to go, if they can leave what they have here.
You’d think registered nurses walking away from their careers would raise serious concerns..
like they know more then me.. it’s their job.

But let’s listen to the media and politicians.. they’re our health experts now

Did they work last year without a vaccine?
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
@justanothername Exactly. Masks and gloves
justanothername · 51-55, M
@MrBrownstone they still wear those but they are or should also be vaccinated.
forty7seventy4 · 46-50, F
@MrBrownstone I see your point, that they got along just fine without it last year.
justanothername · 51-55, M
There’s a world wide shortage of nurses. Most countries were screaming out for nurses BEFORE the pandemic. Now the situation is that much worse as nurses can’t jump between countries for employment opportunities.

To be a nurse takes Four years of college I don't think there's a big field of them.
FurryFace · 61-69, M
@Lostpoet a Doctor must be twice that
justanothername · 51-55, M
@Lostpoet there’s a very big field. Nurses do all the donkey work in hospitals but their salaries don’t reflect it. They also work very long hours.
Nursing is a vocation type job where you do it because you care about people, not because you want to get rich.

there's a shortage of nursing staff in the US. part of the problem is that the "traveling nurses" (they work on contract) can make big bucks working next to regular employees that make far less. it's one of those supply and demand situations.
justanothername · 51-55, M
@Pretzel it’s the same shortage world wide.
There’s also the nursing unions that should protect nurses from having to work in dangerous working conditions when they are not vaccinated.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
Maybe 40-50% of the nurses don’t want to take the vaccine, about half the doctors too.
Maybe that's the problem???

Nursing isn't one of those careers where you can just pluck a replacement off the shelves. It takes years for a new nurse to qualify out of med school... I don't think you'd be impressed to learn that the person looking after you in hospital only joined yesterday and hasn't had even basic training on hygiene and infection control.
FurryFace · 61-69, M
@HootyTheNightOwl my guess is with the Virus around its the First thing they're taught
@FurryFace It still takes years for them to qualify... those qualifying today started their journey three years ago.

Back then, we didn't see Covid19 coming, so we didn't recruit enough staff to take the pressure off now - or we already let them off the final year of their studies at the beginning of the outbreak...
