People hold their peers to the highest standard.
Middle age (that's me) and older - we just see 18 to 21 as "kids being kids".

I know when I see someone in my age group (about 40 to 50) acting stupid because of their mid-life crisis, it gets on my nerves.

Like when I see some fat, balding, 40 something year old man on a motorcycle blasting that nasty rap music, it is like, "Dude, grow up, we are not "cool" anymore."

Maybe because older people may have had kids and understand younger people better.
Often, patience comes with age, along with the remembrance of one’s own silliness as a child.
