It allows quick tests when you log on. Had some security problems a while back but those tend to be completely ignored out in the "real" (stupid) world.

In the microphone settings for it, there should be a bar. When it detects your microphone working, it'll show the level it goes to in there. Make some noise and if you see the bar filling a bit, then it's working
