If Putin was going to interfere in the next US election, is it possible he'd actually promote a Democrat leader instead?

If the aim is to sow discontent and division, he'd probably want a lot of aggrieved Trump voters.

There's a few candidates on the Democratic side who want to shake up the US economy significantly to address inequality. That can also lead to the kind of disruption Putin might want to see

But that is not the aim. Putin had a unique opportunity with Trump, a real estate developer who owed money to Russian banks he has direct influence over, to launder tens of billions or dirty Russian money from drugs and other criminal activities globally. The number of times Russians and Russian connected people like Manafort keep coming up is the clue. But the turnover of Trump built property from one Russian "businessman" to another and another is staggering. Each transfer legitimising more cash and kickbacks going to the Putin retirement fund for services rendered. "Its all about the Benjamins Baby!"

Na at the end of the day Putin is pro him/Russia first, and sowing problems is a fun side hobby for him.

Plus, hell, Trump is sowing the discontent for him... and Trump is basically going after something Putin controls (I'm purely wild guessing some sort of business relationship)... and Putin seems to have little interested, for what ever it is... at least publicly.

A professional troll either has to love that they barely have to do anything to sow problems/issues or a professional troll could also hate it, because it's become too easy and not even a challenge anymore too.

But the Democrats to follow will surely be more anti-Putin which doesn't help Putin.
