Of all the money that e'er I had, I spent it in good company

And all the harm I've ever done
Alas, it was to none but me

The parting glass. I know it's been recorded multiple times. Somewhere I have a Clancy Brothers album with that on it.

@robb65 When I saw those lines i thought it was bit of Burns; but no. it's just similar. Burns probably pinched & changed it to:

"The sweetest hours that e'er I spend,
Are spent amang the lasses, O.

Burns was not asexual ! 🙂

The origins of 'The Parting Glass' are unclear but very old. Some claim it's Irish and some say Scottish. It likely sprang from the very similar iines of "Armstrong's Goodnight" - said to be written by a 16th century murderer about to be hanged.

@MalteseFalconPunch What a great song for a funeral farewell! I had a very laid-back easy going friend who died, and I was astonished at his chosen funeral music - The Ride of the Valkyries! I wonder what was simmering inside of him, that we never knew.

I love The Parting Glass, but didn't know about its origins. Your post sent me 'Googling'. If you're interested there's a long article about it here:

A lot of the language & spelling are old & out of use. It's hard to read unless you're really into it. 'Reivers' refers to thieves who stole cattle & horses in nighttime raids across the Scots/English border, 'Spoiling' means stealing. Apparently the McFarlanes were so good at it that the moon was known by some as McFarlane's Lantern. Doubtless other clans were awarded the same 'honor.'

Goodnight and joy be with you!
And all I've done for want ow wit 😪

I spent most of my money on women and booze and the rest I wasted.
