I'd Rather Have A Few Close Friends Than Many Acquaintances

Often I think about how our friends come into our lives. Was it random? by design? or maybe a little bit of both. Regardless of the reasons, some friends you just know will be by your side for a while. Others you’re not so sure. And then there is that one friend who… well… you hope someday becomes something more. But friend will have to do for now. And that’s ok, I guess.
For a guy who has had his fair share of experiences, this I still can’t figure out. Why some people come into our lives? Why some people go? and others become a part of us. Some friendships feel like they’ll last forever, and others end far too soon. I guess not every friendship is meant to last a lifetime. Though, what does last forever is the pain, when that person is gone.

I’ve had many friendships irl, but the most important ones to me are my friends in Toronto who go back 34 & 39 years. There are 5 of them. Others I’ve known for decades too, but the closeness isn’t as strong. The most recent friendships I’ve created don’t compare to my elementary & high school friends, but they still have been important in my life.

I believe that people who come into your life for a few minutes to a few decades have some particular role, whether it’s just to make you smile & laugh, make you see something or make you think about something that you’ve never thought of before, or just to be a support system. Regardless, you were meant to meet them.

I'm the opposite. I just know people, I've been let down so many times, it's not worth the effort.
