I live with my dog. It gets lonely. I miss my kids/friends/humans. So, I experiment with pastries. Last year, it was chili recipes and I have come up with a bangin' recipe that's quite the crowd-pleaser
I've taken to buttercream frostings, just because you don't have to worry so much about keeping the cake at a particular temperature during the party. There's more important things to worry about... like the reason you're having the party. I've come up with a knock-yer-socks-off strawberry cake and a chocolate cake that'll leave you with a chocolate hangover the next morning; an ice-cream cake that tastes like Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds
I start a new job in July and I'd like a coffee cake to show up with. I thought of a straight white vanilla cake with an espresso dusting or glaze. What it ended up being was a touch of espresso in the vanilla cakes and since I couldn't decide whether I liked the dusting better or the espresso glaze, I made both and have been passing them around. It has been incredible. People are completely torn and I'm okay with that, because it's not some recipe I found online. I think I actually have something here
