Do you regularly have juice in your refrigerator?

I am referring to 100% fruit juice, not "juice beverages" with sugar added.

We typically have grape, orange and/or apple juice on hand. But when we travel and stay in other people's homes, we often find that they do not drink juice.

Perhaps they have fruit instead? Expressing the juice from fruit increases the uptake of the sugars in them rendering them roughly as bad for you in large quantities as any other drink sweetened with the same quantity of sucrose, glucose, or fructose.

Better to eat the fruit instead and get the roughage as well and reduce the intensity of the sugar hit.
RedBaron · M
@ninalanyon Except that the alcohol gets metabolized into sugar. Not good if one is diabetic.
ninalanyon · 70-79, T
@RedBaron But still there will be less of it than in the original juice, and you get to enjoy the alcohol as well. And you could dilute it with sparkling water or drink it slower.

I'm lucky, no diabetes in my family it seems, neither type1 nor type 2 so far.

I get the impression that at least type 2 can be controlled to some extent by avoiding sudden large quantities of sugar. Is this actually the case in practise?
RedBaron · M
@ninalanyon I keep it in check by limiting alcohol and starchy carbs like bread and pasta.
I love fruit juice. Almost every fruit juice (even 100% juice) contains ascorbic acid, which can irritate the bladder.

Maybe they prefer to talk with you in the living room or on the patio instead of hollering from the bathroom.
turbineman40 · 80-89, M
@Mamapolo2016 Does cranberry juice make go to the bathroom as soon?
@turbineman40 If it contains ascorbic acid.
turbineman40 · 80-89, M
@Mamapolo2016 I will have to read the label next time I purchase a jar

My son and I love carrot juice and coconut water.
turbineman40 · 80-89, M
@SW-User Do you make it yourselves? Mix carrots and coconut in a Vitamix?
4meAndyou · F
I have pure cranberry juice, and when I have a small glass of it I add ice, and 1 packet of Splenda.

I also have a mixture of pure cranberry juice, apple juice, pear juice, and I forget what else...and it also needs Splenda to be drinkable.
4meAndyou · F
@cherokeepatti Haven't tried that, yet. But I will!
cherokeepatti · 70-79, F
@4meAndyou It was Wonderful brand….a little tart but no added sugar. Cranberry juice seems to always have either added sugar or aspartame or some other artificial sweetener.
4meAndyou · F
@cherokeepatti Not the stuff I buy. It's awful stuff, too...I can't drink it without Splenda.
Grape juice ! Fermented
carpediem · M
@Stephanintothedarkness I keep an excellent inventory of the same.
@carpediem Saint Julien Beychevelle ?
Lacrima Christi do Vesuvio ?
carpediem · M
@Stephanintothedarkness Neither. Bring some by and we'll do some taste testing.
FreeSpirit1 · 51-55, F
Barley and hops juice, all the time
@FreeSpirit1 my favorite smoothie to have in the fridge
turbineman40 · 80-89, M
@FreeSpirit1 barley and hops juice sounds like a good beer blend to me
turbineman40 · 80-89, M
@turbineman40 what brand of beer do you enjoy? I like the taste of a cold Blue Moon
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
Does lemonade count?
DrWatson · 70-79, M
@samueltyler2 Not what I had in mind, but I do love lemonade too! 😄
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@DrWatson we buy minutemaid, or other lemonade, then I actually mix it with soda water to dilute it.
bowman81 · M
I have cranberry juice.....or the nearest thing to it I can find in the supermarket. It does have sugar added but supposedly half of what is in regular cranberry juice. I checked my supermarket and they don't carry "pure" cranberry juice. I'm not about to buy a barrel of cranberries to stomp on for the squeezings so I will settle for this.
Piper · 61-69, F
Yes. Although I much prefer 100% juice with no added sugar, I do occasionally buy the other kind when it's a 2 for the price of 1 deal. Every now and I even splurge for my very favorite kind, which is Bolthouse Farms 100% Carrot Juice. It's 'pricey', though.
DrWatson · 70-79, M
@Piper My wife likes Bolthouse Farms, but she goes for the fruit variety. And yes, it is expensive!
SW-User
sometimes i have tart cherry or pineapple, but i usually use them to infuse in water. every now and then i'll do a straight shot of the cherry
SW-User
@DrWatson right? it cleanses the soul! 😅
DrWatson · 70-79, M
@SW-User 🥃🥃 cheers!

@DrWatson to your health and mine 🍒
Scribbles · 36-40, F
No. I sometimes buy pear juice around Christmas time. Because I adore pear juice. That's about it. I'd rather drink water, tea, coffee or kombucha.

I usually have some kind of fruit to munch on in the kitchen though or some in the freezer for smoothies. I always thought 100 percent fruit juice was bad to drink regularly, since it still has so much natural sugars. I once tried drinking fruit juice heavily diluted when I attempted to quit coffee. It just wasn't for me.
Neoerectus · M
Sugar water is sugar water. I like the flavor, but I drink sparingly. Industry overhyped the benefits.
Thevy29 · 41-45, M
Good luck finding 100% juice these days..
DrWatson · 70-79, M
@Thevy29 We buy it regularly.
Thevy29 · 41-45, M
@DrWatson Where from?
DrWatson · 70-79, M
@Thevy29 Ordinary grocery stores.
cherokeepatti · 70-79, F
Pomegranate. Been getting large jugs at Sam’s Club
SW-User
cherokeepatti · 70-79, F
@SW-User yes it is
cherokeepatti · 70-79, F
@MrBrownstone and for other things too. I wish it was cheap as it is in Iran. They have fountains that have pomegranate juice and many drink it rather than something like soft drinks.
Starcrossed · 46-50, F
Yes and no.
Yes there is juice, no one can drink it though because the tween drinks straight out of the bottle. I haven't been able to train that bad habit away yet. 😕
SlaveEt · 36-40, F
@Starcrossed
Hmm, personally I'd either buy single serve bottles, stop buying it all together or make them pay for the bottle every time they drink from it so no one else can have some. They are not sharing so maybe they need a 3 year old's lesson on sharing? 😉
Starcrossed · 46-50, F
@SlaveEt well I actually kinda did stop buying them. Kid only drank half of a lemonade, half an OJ and half some other juice and they sat in the fridge without being dumped or replaced for like a month or two past expiration.
SlaveEt · 36-40, F
@Starcrossed
Figures!
JoyfulSilence · 51-55, M
I used to have juice blends (apple, grape, cherry). I did not have orange due to the acidity.

Now I have none, since I was diagnosed with diabetes.

I worry I am not getting enough vitamin C now.
TexChik · F
We have juicer . My husband grinds up the orange peel and all . I make him basically sterile the oranges and peaches before he does that . There is always some concoction in the fridge . 😂
hunkalove · 70-79, M
Too expensive. I recently paid a small fortune for some organic carrot juice that was mostly water and didn't taste a thing like carrots.
Doomflower · 41-45, M
Nope. I eat fruit and drink water. Fruit juice is just liquid sugar with fewer of the nutrients that fruit provides.
No. Only every now and then, and it’s usually cold-pressed pineapple juice (which I love) or homemade beet juice (which I don’t like).
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
No almost never we just drink milk and water (and alcholic beverages) primarily.
Chickie · F
@JimboSaturn doesn't milk strips you of your calcium?
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
@Chickie Milk is a source of calcium. There is some research to the contrary and some popular opinion, but I think most science thinks the contrary.
And I just like milk.
None.. sometimes orange juice if my son asked for it but it’s just water (with and without gas) for us.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
No. We used to, years ago -- but there's just too much sugar in juice to keep it around all the time.
Elessar · 31-35, M
Occasionally I buy one of those big A+C+E boxes, or red apple or green apple or *whisper* pineapple, but seldom
DearAmbellina2113 · 41-45, F
Never. Too much sugar. We have water, green tea, and my bf's sugar-free Gatorade.
helenS · 36-40, F
Orange juice in summer, because I love a Garibaldi in the evening. (= orange juice + Campari)
turbineman40 · 80-89, M
V-8 is my favorite, then with pulp included orange juice a close second. I grew up on my Dad's orange grove
I used to have a plentiful supply of orange juice but haven't drunk any for ages
AbbySvenz · F
Lemonade, cranberry, apple…. in addition to water and iced tea
BalthazarBlake · 61-69, M
I like to have orange juice. 🍊 I buy the fresh not the concentrated type.
Lilymoon · F
No but sometimes I make my own strawberry/orange juice

@NoThanksLeon what else do you add to the mixture?
IM5688 · 70-79, M
Yes, apple juice and cran-apple juice.
SW-User
No , I get too lazy to prepare them , but I love natural juices
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
No. But when I do I look for 100% juice.
Orange usually.

i'm more of a milk or coke person
I do have juice. 100 % vitamin C requirements. Only need 1 cup daily. Many people drink far too much juice.
SlaveEt · 36-40, F
Yes but it usually sits in there for a very long time. We have it but don't drink it much. It's pure sugar.
RubySoo · 56-60, F
I usually have orange juice in plus i but smoothies sometimes.....but i know they arent the healthiest.
X
I gave up fruit juice for pieces of fruit, so I keep strawberries, blueberries, nectarines, peaches, apples in the fridge to snack on, and water to quench my thirst. I also have cold brew coffee—nobody’s perfect. 😅
Juice has added color, smell, sugar. I don't drink juice anymore.
meggie · F
No we buy oranges and squeeze our own each day.
Casheyane · 31-35, F
Most have sugar in them, I think.
RedBaron · M
No. Why you want to know?
Matt85 · 36-40, M
On occasion I'll have OJ.
Wiseacre · F
Only rarely
SW-User
We always have orange, I only buy juices with no added sugars, my teens love many different flavours, I usually have litres of juice in the fridge, today it's blueberry, tropical and orange juices.
