A question for the men…

If you don’t live in a part of the world where kilts are commonly worn, could you see wearing them if they suddenly became popular where you are ?
leahlikes · 18-21, F
lmao i wonder how the guys will feel if they start getting upskirted bring on the kilts
chrisCA · M
@bijouxbroussard I know. I can't imagine women engaging in that sort of behaviour.
@LordShadowfire I heard this years ago and love it ! 😆
malizz · 70-79, M
@leahlikes It does happen
Harmonium1923 · 51-55, M
I’m afraid I’d look more like a Catholic schoolgirl than a Scottish warrior.
Harmonium1923 · 51-55, M
@bijouxbroussard The best. 😎 And I’d do it for you, Bijoux. Kilt, LBD, leather mini, whatever. Just not one of those polo shirt / body suit things.
pedrohedgerow · 61-69, M
@Harmonium1923 wow...evening bb 👍
@pedrohedgerow Hello, Pedro. 😄
Fungirlmmm · 51-55, F
I am not a man, but gosh I hope many will embrace it.
@Fungirlmmm I’ve always admired them, too.
Fungirlmmm · 51-55, F
@bijouxbroussard They are quite sexy and classy.
SW-User
I live in Scotland but I'm not Scottish so I'll never wear one. It would just seems a bit pretentious.
SW-User
@Ozymandiaz Thats true. They often come out at formal events. I am near Edinburgh so there are quite a few tourist related kilts.
@SW-User @Ozymandiaz I’ve seen photos of the late Prince Philip and King Charles wearing kilts on occasion, I imagine at special events.
SW-User
@bijouxbroussard I think they would usually wear them in Scotland, at least in Public.
We develop our romanticism from movies, mostly.

Sad to say, there are few men who would look as pretty in a kilt as Liam Neeson or Mel Gibson (he's a jerk, but he's pretty).
@Mamapolo2016 You’re right, although I first remember seeing kilts on tv and Pop explained about them. My middle sister and I were with Mom running errands near the Scottish Rite Temple and saw a man wearing a kilt. We were waiting outside a store for our mother and Sis (who hadn’t seen the tv show) commented on "a man wearing a dress" (we were 7 and 5, I think). I told her it wasn’t a "dress"but a kilt. 😄
Lilymoon · F
I like them 🤩

Ontheroad · M
@metaldog Hey! His eyes are up there! 🤣😂🤣😂
Ontheroad · M
@bijouxbroussard Oh? Another kilt lover I see... sure it's the kilt, we know... we really know 😜😂🤣😂🤣
@Ontheroad You saw the photos I posted. I didn’t post anyone bare-chested because I was addressing the question to men, as standard wear. 😄
Fluffybull · F
Am answering this on behalf of my hubby. We live in Scotland but he's English. He loves wearing his kilt any time. Most Scots here just wear them at weddings, Burns suppers, funerals. So yes, he wears one and is having another made up in my tartan as he doesn't have one of his own 🤗
@Fluffybull My cousin’s wife surprised him with a kilt in the colors of her family’s tartan. He was very touched, and he wore it, too.
Fluffybull · F
@bijouxbroussard A lovely gift! 👏🤗♥️
Sure. I have worn the central Asian half chuba before. It's a common traditional attire in Tibet, Bhutan, Nepal, and so on.

It doesn't represent clan. The color is either related to religious practice or just personal choice. It's comfortable AF.

Traditional women of this region will have an apron over it if they are married.

Nope. To me, fashion is like a religion I don't believe in. Yeah, I'll wear khakis or a suit when my wife tells me to (just like uncovering my head in a church), but jeans & sneakers are very comfortable and practical. For a lark I wore a dress at a New Years party once years ago; it was less comfortable and less practical. So I'm not gonna let "fashion" get me into impractical clothing.
@ElwoodBlues Fair enough.
cycleman · 61-69, M
No plaid for me!
A nice solid black I think I would.
SageWanderer · 70-79, M
@cycleman I do have one plaid but the rest of mine are solid colors.
Ontheroad · M
I'm about a half Scots and half Irish, so culturally I'd feel appropriate, but I wouldn't because I'm a pants guy - jeans and when I go nuts, khaki's for dress up! I've only owned a couple of pair of men shorts and even those I wore once or twice and that was it.
SW-User
@Ontheroad Irish people don't wear kilts
@SW-User This is basically what a friend told me when I asked, because I saw someone I knew was Irish wearing one.
Irish Kilts History
It is true: the origin of kilts lies in Scotland. Here the highland dress, also known as the belted plaid or great kilt (also known as feileadh mor meaning large wrap in Gaelic) emerged during the 16th century. The word kilt is a Scots word which means to tuck up clothes around one’s body. Originally, the great kilt was a full-length piece of clothing, which could even be worn as a cloak wrapped over the shoulder.
The history of kilts in Ireland is less ancient. In fact, Irish kilts are a modern invention, which nevertheless have their own right in Irish history. Some scholars date the earliest adoption of Scottish kilts by Irish nationalists in the 1850s.
By the end of the 19th century, Celtic Revivalists had more or less successfully adopted it as a symbol of Irish or Gaelic identity. During the “Gaelic Revival”, an Irish national consciousness began to grow and with it, the urge to counteract British colonial culture in Ireland.
Many areas of Irish culture were ‘rediscovered’, be it sports (the Gaelic Athletic Association aka the GAA), the Irish language, Irish literature, Irish arts and crafts and more.
In a nutshell: The Irish kilts history really begins with the Irish nationalist movement.
In the 20th century, at the dawn of the First World War, kilts were soon adopted by pipers and pipe bands in the Irish military (for example the still existing Black Raven Pipe Band or the Youghal Pipe Band). Pipe Bands were an important pool of nationalist recruitment, for example the Irish Volunteers (later transformed into the IRA).

@bijouxbroussard yes, I understand and appreciate that knowledge, but we don't wear kilts, it's not normal in our culture
Pretzel · 61-69, M
I don't think so.
don't care for drafts
JohnnyNoir · 56-60, M
Not sure but I feel like my Siciliano genetics are going to clash with that look.
dancingtongue · 80-89, M
@robingoodfellow Your Siciliano DNA is likely to include some Celtic blood, because they are one of the multitude of sea-faring people who have settled on the island at one time or another.
@dancingtongue now that's very interesting to me on a personal level. I had not heard that before but I'm going to research it. Thank you.
fun4us2b · M
@robingoodfellow @dancingtongue I was also thinking the Spartans and Gladiator get ups looked like Kilts to me - https://scottishkiltshop.com/products/italian-tartan - and I agree while Spain is more clear, there are linguistic ties between the European languages. The people warred and then married at some point.

Convivial · 26-30, F
Is this where i bring up cultural appropriation by the fashion industry🤔
@Convivial Touché ! ☺️
Convivial · 26-30, F
@bijouxbroussard tbh, i have split feelings on the issue... Not sure where the rules should be in that one lol
Foxyfoxfox · 51-55, F
Went to the dispensary and the guy helping me had on a kilt. I was impressed with his confidence in wearing one.
PTCdresser57 · 61-69, M
I would love them...airy and I think I have the legs for them
[image/video - please log in to see this content]
@PTCdresser57 Yes, definitely. 👍🏽
I am a perv, I would only wear leather mini kilts.
@Thewhazzupdude Oh, okay !
Pfuzylogic · M
David Bowie wore men’s dresses.
i imagine a kilt could be fun.
Docdon23 · M
Sure--they look breezy and liberating
windinhishair · 61-69, M
I would have no problem wearing a kilt.
Elessar · 26-30, M
We're going down such an insane timeline that if you told me that the Scots - hellbent to rejoin the EU by force, invading it and imposing the kilt on any conquered population - by 2030 were at the doorstep of Rome, I might even believe you.
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
@Elessar revenge for the Roman colonisation of the British Isles! Thanks for the toilets and aqueducts though, they're neat.
DrWatson · 70-79, M
I have absolutely no Scottish ancestry, so I would not be drawn to this.

But I do know an American of Scottish heritage who does wear one occasionally. He wore it, years ago, on the day that Scotland was voting on whether to leave the UK!
exexec · 61-69, C
I've always wanted a kilt in honor of my Scottish ancestry, but they were far too expensive for my limited budget.
@exexec Oh, okay. I didn’t realize that.
exexec · 61-69, C
@bijouxbroussard I guess you can get cheaper ones.
malizz · 70-79, M
@exexec I have a cheap one for casual, but it's not nearly as good.
fun4us2b · M
Funny that you ask as I have given this some thought 😂

Answer is - Very unlikely.

I would wear a shawl if they became popular for men. They keep you warm on chilly days, then you can roll it up and stuff it in your backpack...
Honestly I would look more like a woman. Since people will think it is a skirt.
@samueltyler2 honestly no. But here people don't know what kilts are.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@littlepuppywantanewlife That’s why I specified "if they suddenly became popular where you are".
caPnAhab · 26-30, M
Kilts are pretty cool. Though, I don't see myself wearing one. They're not nearly as practical as pants
@caPnAhab No, I imagine not.
caPnAhab · 26-30, M
@bijouxbroussard yeah, no way. I got to some pockets on me. 12 at least!
chrisCA · M
No.
I don't see why women wear them.
They don't seem practical.
Having to worry how to sit, and all.
@chrisCA Longer skirts can be comfortable, actually, but they’re not practical as activewear.
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
Of course! But I'm probably not very representative.

This is a skirt of course, not a kilt. Much lighter and more comfortable I suspect:
dancingtongue · 80-89, M
I believe I would love the feel, and have never liked the limited wardrobe choices for men, so I would certainly give them a try.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
I guess so -- I spend most of my "dressed" life just hanging around in an old-fashioned night shirt.
They are popular in many of the bars of Pal m Spring. Personally, I'm strictly tee shirts and jeans.
Dino11 · M
If there are women skirt chasers too....why not..😉
@Dino11 I suspect you’d look awesome. 😊
Dino11 · M
malizz · 70-79, M
@Dino11 There are defo women kilt chasers. You get used to being eyed up.
They look comfortable lol I usually keep a blanket on my legs when it gets too cold anyway 😃
BackyardShaman · 61-69, M
No, I’m not into wearing stuff like this but I’m cool with other guys wearing them.
I saw a man wearing one just last week.
It looked good. I complemented him on it.
malizz · 70-79, M
I'm Scottish so it's not a problem
@malizz Right. 👍🏽
@malizz Actually, that brings a question to mind: If kilts became popular in the rest of the world, would you be okay with that, or would you see it as an appropriation of something uniquely Scottish ?
malizz · 70-79, M
@bijouxbroussard I see tartan as being the Scottish bit: Kilts elsewhere tend to be in plain colours.
IM5688 · 61-69, M
No way would I wear a kilt. Give me my denim jeans and a flannel shirt.
Wyocowboy · M
I have about 40% of Scottish in me, i would wear one.
tindrummer · M
maybe:
I wore a Samoan wrap-around
when I was manic 😎
scorpiolovedeep · 51-55, M
Nah

Love shorts instead , something like this

My friend married a scot and he and his groomsmen all wore kilts. Traditionally the tartan is specific to their clan and also traditionally then men do not wear anything underneath...... this is true 😏🥴
They are usually worn to events, you won't see them going out for a walk or going to work in a kilt

In Greece there are men who wear a skirt as part of traditional dress and also some parts of asia the men wear a sarong.

Also some guys now do wear skirts, i have seen it in london.. but it is a rarity.
malizz · 70-79, M
@InOtterWords It's a good tradition
DownTheStreet · 56-60, M
No. There’s a reason they aren’t widely popular
SageWanderer · 70-79, M
Pretty much daily wear.
@SageWanderer Very cool ! 👍🏽
SubstantialKick · 36-40, M
Nah, not really my thing lol.
bowman81 · M
Nope, not for me.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
Nope, not my thing.
plasticpants02 · 61-69, M
Nope, cant see it
sciguy18 · M
Nobody wants to see that...
