How can people be so cruel?

I lost my dad when I was 11 yrs old. I loved my dad. One of my most cherished items from him was the last picture taken of him on the job. My dad was a surveyor of a large constructions company. He was a field engineer and helped place the big buildings on the lot to construct. I kept that picture on my dresser for over 2 years. He passed in 1967 and the pic was taken in 1965.

An aunt asked my mom if she could make a copy of it. Of course, my mom said. The aunt never returned the pic. I went to her house 5 times to get it and she refused to hand it over. I talked to her daughters. They refused to help me until she passed away. Well she died in November and last night, I finally got the pic back. It took 55 years but It is mine again. How cruel of her to keep the picture from me.

It is not in the best of shape so I am going to have another copy made. I can't tell you the emotion i felt when i opened the package.
Mellowgirl · 31-35, F
I'm glad you have it back
akindheart · 61-69, F
@Mellowgirl me too even if it took 55 years
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
She could have made a copy and returned the original. I don’t know what is wrong with some people.
SW-User
@cherokeepatti I agree. For some reason, that just isn't good enough as the original... having what others hold dear to heart.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@SW-User it has writing on the back which makes it even more special.
SW-User
@akindheart Like I said, the original holds more value to those who have it because of what it is. Others think they deserved it and make the choice to keep those items based on their idea that they should have been the ones to have the items.
Thinkerbell · 41-45, F
Your aunt was a bully.
For some perverted reason, some people enjoy making others suffer.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@Thinkerbell she was a selfish bully. i borrowed a pic from her of my dad int he Army and refused to return it until she gave me mine back. she told everybody i stole it from her. crazy
antonioioio · 70-79, M
When you louse a parent when you are young, those pictures are very special.
I lost my mother when I was 9 in 1963 and my first cousin and friend came to my house a few years ago with a present a picture of my mothers wedding photo,
A short time later on he was diagnosed with motornuron disease,
He little no time left now.
I so glad you got that picture and sometimes things happen out the nicest of kindness
Ambroseguy80 · 51-55, M
That really is cruel, and it took her death to get it back to you. I’m sorry that was kept from you so viciously. But - at least you got it back.
Ambroseguy80 · 51-55, M
@akindheart my wife has endured a similar situation with regard to her father. The step mother refused to give her any of the precious photos and videos, and now that stepmom has passed, a vicious step-sister from another mister (and the stepmom) continues to spite her memories of my wife’s own biological father.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@Ambroseguy80 THAT is horrible. those pics mean nothing to the stepsister and everything to your wife. what a blow....
Ambroseguy80 · 51-55, M
@akindheart exactly
Tennessean · 31-35, F
Yep people can be so cruel especially family, condolences for you and your father may he Rest In Peace. Thank goodness you found his picture finally.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Tennessean my youngest sister went through the family home as soon as our aunt (who raised us) was in the nursing home. She grabbed everything she wanted, and gave the other things away to strangers (people the family didn’t know) and threw the rest in the trash. yes family can be so cruel. There were some sentimental things that were thrown away like trash and she did it secretly except one sister (for some unknown reason maybe had a feeling something was going on) drove out to the rural property and found her and several others there doing this.

Sometimes, others feel they had a right to certain things and that the ones who actually have those things... didn't really deserve them or shouldn't have been the ones chosen to have the items... so, they ask to see them and just keep them.... and show no remorse for it or for how hurt it leaves others feeling. For some damn reason, they feel it's their rights to do that and others should let it go. But the hurt just hangs around with the passing of time.
I'm glad you got that picture back.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@SW-User she had thousands of family photos and would not return them to anyone or share. meanwhile, her daughter has no clue about genealogy and will probably toss them. so sad.
Havesomefun2 · 56-60, M
Family can be awful sometimes
akindheart · 61-69, F
@Havesomefun2 well it is painful for sure.
Havesomefun2 · 56-60, M
@akindheart I know when my great grandma died my great grandfather had a friend when he passed away she got the lot
akindheart · 61-69, F
@Havesomefun2 thats sad because it meant nothing to the friend
Glad you have it back. Sometime relatives are worse than your enemy.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@jjoe01 the postman left it on the sidewalk and it was pouring rain. i was sure it was soaked or ruined. thankfully the outside of the box was soaked but not the pic.
@akindheart Your father is looking after you and protecting the memories you have of him.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@jjoe01 i sure hope so!
Barefooter25 · 46-50, M
I am so sorry that has happened. It was really selfish of her to keep that picture after you asked numerous times to give it back. Unfortunately, we live in a time where people borrow stuff from others and never return them. Just be glad you got your picture back.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@Barefooter25 she had all these family photos and would not share. i had to fight to get it back, but it is safely in my safe deposit box now! ihave a copy on my dresser
Barefooter25 · 46-50, M
@akindheart I am so sorry about your dad. My father died 5 months ago.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@Barefooter25 oh no...i am sorry. he died young so my brothers and sisters don't remember him but i sure do. I am sorry for YOUR loss.
SW-User
Having lost my dad this post really hits home. I have no words to say.
akindheart · 61-69, F

anoderod55 · 61-69, M
@akindheart That is sad . I do understand . Caring people are the ones that get hurt
Jenny1234 · 51-55, F

akindheart · 61-69, F

AngelKrish · 26-30, M
@akindheart i am waiting for justice because i believe karma hits back!
I know that's not gonna return peace of my mind and happiness in my family!

Sometimes you have to cut off members of your biological family. It hurts but is best in the long run.
akindheart · 61-69, F

Very nice photo and the story behind it. At least now you can cherish forever.
