What's the most expensive car repair that you have ever needed?

Years ago, I had an old Ford Escort which had a misfire due to a broken valve spring. Total cost of the repair if I remember, was somewhere between $400-$450.

The o e I only had an estimate for was just north of $7k for a transmission on an AWD station wagon that was worth about $5k. Opted to donate the car as a non running parts car since everything else was pristine. That was not my fault or that of the vehicle, rather the tech who was supposed to change the fluid didn’t remember to put any back into the Volvo.

One that I had to pay was $4500 for general maintenance (fluids, belts, hoses) and tires on a Jaguar.

Just got my car repaired cost 1200 bucks and it's in again for another puncture in the same tire 🙄

Whole engine - $5000 not my car, but company car...then the transmission went 😡

Almost an engine but the truck was stolen and never recovered

I have an old Escort now actually. Its pretty pristine for the most part, but I think I'm going to have an issue with a valve spring or valve seat soon.

Did yours still run when the spring broke? I'm sure it shook like crazy while it was idling, but that too seems to be common with them
@NickyLee Yeah it still ran but it had a misfire, ticking, and no power whatsoever. A few years after I got that fixed, a valve dropped into the engine on another cylinder, and that was it. She was done. And yeah, 90s Escorts were known for suddenly dropping their valves with one of the engines.

I had to repair a car and it cost $3500

My now departed Volvo cost me $thousands of work on the Engine. My mistake for buying one from when Ford owned the company.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@MarmeeMarch Yes. The Motor was a Ford designed 3.2 litre six, modified to go into the car.

@MarmeeMarch Now you know I am about economics. So lets go there after me saying that the motor and attached transmission were indeed 90% of the non service issues the car caused me. Back when smaller car companies where being swallowed up by bigger ones globally, the Two Swedish Companies, Volvo and Saab where both bought out. Saab went to GM and after a few years of trying to get Saab to build cars DOWN to GM standard, GM gave up and sold them off. Ford Bought Volvo to raid their safety know how save money globally on having to design their own safer cars. They were more successful in influencing Volvo in standardizing some parts (Like $h*tty Power trains) and that made Volvos easier for lower skilled service people to work with. (Volvo had this sweet 5 cylinder 2.4 Litre motor.. That was unique.. And "unique" is not profitable in cars) So after a few years of picking Volvos safety and tech brains, Ford sold the Company, which is I believe now owned by a Chinese consortium.

Whole engine rebuild on a Chevy trailblazer. $3200 and someone else totalled it a year later. 😔

Guys did a really great job on the rebuild. What a waste that someone else totalled it.

113$ for a new clutch.

That's the most expensive amount I've ever paid owning the car for 10 years.

I seized the engine on my first car. Very expensive lesson. That was the end of the car.

1987 dodge raider with a Mitsubishi engine. Buying the car was a repair job.

Turbo went on Mazda CX-7. 6k
@LunarOrbit Yikes 😬.
LunarOrbit · 56-60, M
@latinbutterfly The turbos in the CX-7s were notorious for failing and taking the engine with it. The car had sentimental value and a kick-ass Bose stereo in it. Luckily it’s still going.
@LunarOrbit Wow, I did not know that.

If you include totaling the car and having it repaired...~ 3k

I have an old Ford Escort now lol. I've definitely dumped more than $450 in it though
