It makes sense but I don't see this being very successful with others
Keepitsimple · 51-55, F
They can bulk by and stock up before hand. It’s not essential ultimately.
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@Keepitsimple Yes but the majority of people here cannot afford to bulk buy. You are right, it is not essential. It is essential for addicts though and they are going to do who knows what.
Lanyx · 41-45, M
That is a good move, Mr. Ramaphosa. I am being genuine. Well, this will force people to collide with their addictions (especially to tobacco) head on.

(I have been a resident in SA between 1990 and Jan 2020. I am currently under self-isolation in Europe)
Lanyx · 41-45, M
@Wraithorn I effectively grew up, studied and worked in SA. In the most part, I did enjoy SA. I loved the wide-open veld. I enjoyed long journeys where for tens of km was nothing.
Juju's treats of land reform were my trigger.
MethDozer · M
@Lanyx Now isn't the time or place to tackle peoples addictions. A public health crisis that is dependent on.people staying calm in varying degrees of isolation isn't the time.not place to force people to collide with their addictions and vices. It's a recipe for disaster that moves the consequences of their bad lifestyle choices further o to the public.
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@Lanyx The fauna and flora are quite special. I know many people who left because of Juju and similar behaviour. I wish you luck there in Europe.
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@FloorGenAdm Good point.
Jm31xxx · 41-45, M
This is terrifying. If they do this in the UK, Im fucked
MethDozer · M
It's bad idea. It ignores that people will go to extremes for a fix. Not all or even most but enough are addicted enough they will. This just creates a black market for both being solenoid of houses where the human to human contact and cleanliness cannot be regulated. That increase risk of transmission. This encourages people to bust more shorts and for some, they might even scrounge for used ciggies. That encourages transmission. It encourages alcoholics to find their drinking buddies who have the booze. This increases transmission. For a small percentage of alcoholics their addiction is great enough to cause physical impairment that leads to medical resources being diverted. That's a problem .

It makes sense on the surface since they aren't necessities ( despite the fact liquor is a disinfectant in an emergency), but in.practice it is ignoring the behaviours of people under stress who have a vice and aren't able to get it.

Very misguided and ignorant decision.
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@MethDozer That is some good food for thought there. Thanks for answering.
MethDozer · M
@Wraithorn Besides the fact all his reasons you listed are wonky at best.
Peapod · 61-69, F
@MethDozer Best Answer here and well put. I think this is why the president is suddenly all concerned with the cartels. Isolation and quarantines only make addicts more antsy and they will get their drug by any means they can. Prohibition killed 10's of thousands of people because they tried to make their own bootleg concoction. Some of it was downright poisonous.
For alcoholics, untended withdrawal can be as fatal as the virus.

A side effect of sudden obstruction to almost any addiction is irritation and anger.

The cure may be worse than the ailment.

At the very least they should provide free weed.
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@chrisCA That reminds me of a cheap homemade drink that some people sell in my country. I presume it will become more popular among hard drinkers during the ban. Unfortunately it can contain ingredients like battery acid and brake fluid. Not good...
@Wraithorn US earthlings who are still here haven't. Until now.
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@Mamapolo2016 We need our grandparents who endured such things during the 2nd world war to give advice but they're dead and gone.
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
Not clever.
In trying to save people the other measures may just heighten anxiety and tension for others.

Would make more sense to perhaps ration things like booze.
Cigarettes too if they really want to hit people with a 'health kick' idea. Assuming of course if they're going down that route they're also reducing pricing for fruit and veg.
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@Picklebobble2 Mmmm...it's going to be interesting to see what happens. Some NGO's have called for an end to the ban for the sake of addicts who are going freak out in various ways.
Nyloncapes · 61-69, M
People of uk putting up with a lot with the isolation and majority of people doing it, this would be the final straw for them, and would not work
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@Nyloncapes I can only imagine.
SW-User
The only way they would take away my cigarettes is from my cold dead hands...🚬
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@SW-User Imagine being a policeman who smokes or drinks and who now has to enforce such laws...:-)
Many peeps are going to take their withdrawal symptoms out on each other I think.
nothing totalitarian about that.. carry on 😏👍
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout It's quite odd how a microscopic being is causing such upheaval in the world, no ? 🙂
@Wraithorn death by 1000 tiny cuts.. I’ll bet there’s been a tonne of restrictions on ciggs leading up to it.. no smoking in public places.. etc etc
dale74 · M
Someone wants a riot
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
People who are addicted to those will be climbing the walls. They can make homemade alcohol like wine or beer but it takes a little time
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@cherokeepatti Yeah...I think it might help to contain the virus a bit but it is going to fray people's nerves which might cause other problems. We'll see what happens I suppose.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Wraithorn the liquor stores are open for business here but they either deliver or do curbside delivery after verifying their ages. The problem that I see is when some are at home not working that they can drink so
Much that they get violent on their spouses. I used to have a police scanner radio and noticed a pattern of that during periods of bad weather like ice storms or snow storms
Omf thats such a bad idea! Peeps will die from alcohol withdrawal :(
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@TryingtoLava It is going to be interesting I think. We'll see what happens. I hope you have a nice day cousin. 🙂
Wraithorn · 51-55, M

@Wraithorn you to cousin <3 <3 <3
At Least it’s not the Philippines with Robert 😏

Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout I read about that and his previous shenanigans. I enjoy his disrespecting of the catholic church. On the other hand he pretty much disrespects everything.
I think he and I need to have a chat one day about his general behaviour. 🙂
@Wraithorn he was elected on the premises of shooting drug dealers..
chrisCA · M
Prohibition does not work, except for creating a black market, and making gangsters rich.
Lochlee · 51-55, F
Wraithorn, I am sure there is some or other Shebeen still doing business. We both know the townships cannot be policed entirely. On the upside, a friend who works in casualties says the trauma cases are way down. On the downside, given our domestic violence problem/rape problem in South Africa, let us hope that after lockdown we won't see a rise in stats where that is concerned. Time will tell. Yes, he did leave it to Bheki Cele to announce.. clever move.
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@Lochlee It's a complicated situation isn't it ? If trauma injuries are less then that's good. Let's see where we are in a couple of weeks time. Interesting times we are living in right now...
Lochlee · 51-55, F
@Wraithorn It is very strange. Let us hope this in not the spark in gunpowder and that we can pick up the pieces when lockdown ends, knowing that is when the second battle begins. But, yes, traumas are down because so many injuries and murders are caused by drunken brawls. So perhaps they said NONE (alcohol), knowing full well there would be SOME (Ramaphosa using some of the skills he learnt in his NUM days) 🙂. Time will tell.
curiosi · 61-69, F
The government should NOT be playing nanny.
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@curiosi It does seem a bit heavy handed doesn't it ? Another reason I forgot to mention above is that the public health system cannot cope during normal times. So if too many people become infected then it might just collapse totally.
However, I'm not sure it's a good thing to stress people out by banning their addictions.
It's almost impossible to stop the virus spreading though when millions of people live in shacks built close together in densely populated townships.
It is going to spread whether or not people are drinking or smoking.
I'm no expert though. I just hope that Africans have some kind of immunity to Covid19 or...well I don't know what will happen. We'll see...
Frank52 · 70-79, M
Genuine addicts will do ANYTHING to get their fix up to and including hurting other people. To stop an alcoholic drinking instantly without medical help can kill them, as others have said. What will become apparent are the large number of people who will be in denial that they are addicted but will be forced to realise that they are not in control: a chemical controls them.
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@Frank52 Thank you for saying that. It's the truth and many people do not realise how addicted they are until the product is banned. People can get unusuallly nasty when they need their fix.

Let's ban coffee as well shall we ? That could start a world war. 🙂
Frank52 · 70-79, M
@Wraithorn I drink de-caff so not an issue, but I know a few people who would have a melt down without coffee. 😀
Lochlee · 51-55, F
The cigarette ban was strange though... wonder why.
chrisCA · M
@Lochlee Lol. Many already do. Canadians are allowed to grow four plants legally.
Lochlee · 51-55, F
@chrisCA I can just see the lockdownees making a special note on the shopping list: potting soil, pot and seeds!
chrisCA · M
@Lochlee Some do have the time on their hands.
Piper · 61-69, F
I'd think it was a really bad idea, for reasons some others have already mentioned. I just don't believe at a time when so many people are feeling such heightened worries and stress, is a good time at all...to be banning the sale of their "crutches".
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@Piper Agreed. I think a lot of people, especially the poor who cannot buy in bulk, are going to get really angry at such heavy handed tactics.

Maybe the decision will be reversed. Or not...we'll see what happens. Thanks for answering piper.
Peapod · 61-69, F
I am worried that by banning these things, people will turn to other means that may be more harmful. Chronic alcoholics reach a point of needing to drink daily and unfortunately, likely don't have the means to get medical treatment. They may turn to very toxic alternatives like they did during prohibition.
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@Peapod Yeah, that's the thing. I see methylated spirits becoming popular amoung heavy drinkers temporarily.
Peapod · 61-69, F
@Wraithorn Ironically the hospitals may end up with some of these people.
Azlotto · M
I don't smoke...Alcohol, I have plenty, but I can live without it.

I bet crime would go up if they were banned.
KevinOfTheHill · 26-30, M
Mass riots.
I don’t have either habit.
However, I do think it would be a bad thing for government to be that intrusive .
Yeah, they’d have a tough time enforcing that here.
However, for now, pot dispensaries are only being allowed to serve people with scripts. Recreational customers can only purchase it via delivery service, which not all providers use. The idea is to limit the number of people at these facilities to those with medical needs.
chrisCA · M
@bijouxbroussard I have noticed one of local black market dealers will do deliveries. Lol
