I genuflect in prayer to express the gratitude in my heart for no othet reason than to give it voice. My faith is in God alone, never tied by the restraints of any one defined religion. The conflicts of existence, creation or evolution have no impact on the spirit I was born with nor a check list of whom I'm thankful to.

That implies that the Big Bang was an intentional event. I myself simply accept the fact I’m here. The why, again implies , intent. There doesn’t have to be any.

For me being [i]grateful for[/i] is more important than being [i]grateful to[/i].

If I focus on being [i]grateful to[/i], then as a non-atheist (non-nihilist?) I end up being grateful to just one thing for everything. God, Being, Life, whatever one might want to call it.

Sure. That is good.

But being [i]grateful for[/i] makes me aware that everything I enjoy has much more beneath it. I’m eating a bagel now, but I have this leisure because a lot of people have made it happen. At deep levels. The ER attending not letting me die a few years ago— so I can eat a bagel now. That people are doing a lot of dirty work to just let society exist so that eating a bagel is a possibility.

I find focusing on [i]grateful to[/i] can make people indifferent to all the interdependence in life. God put that bagel on my plate, nobody else. So why show any gratitude beyond that? But I find focusing on [i]grateful for[/i] naturally brings one to [i]grateful to[/i].

A belief in God is not necessary for gratitude, there’s plenty of non-theistic religions and philosophies that practice gratitude and love without a belief in God.

Buddhists for example don’t believe in God or worship a god but practice gratitude and love as a major part of their life.

I’m grateful to Nature and the Universe for being alive.

I don't feel grateful toward anything for my mere existence.
But when i'm thinking of something like having access to unlimited, clean drinking water I just experience a non-specific gratitude for my situation.

Grateful to? Due to my short lifespan the initial expansion of the universe from the singularity and the evolutionary process has very little to do with me as I wont be around long enough to see the universe or our species, and the other species around the world, continue to change. And since there is no answer as to 'why' when it comes to the matter of existence then I'm left to decide instead how I feel about it, and how I feel about the fact that I am apart of existence and that I do exist, and that I came into existence without of my consent. So having said all that, I exist and I've not always had the best of it but I cant blame existence for that since it is indifferent; so what am I grateful for? I'm grateful for the things that make my time existing as peaceful, secure, safe, wonderful and joyfully interesting as possible. I say joyfully interesting because interesting doesn't always mean peaceful, secure, safe, wonderful or joyful.

I'm grateful to be alive.

Grateful that I’m free to perform acts of kindness because I [b]want[/b] to, and not from a fear of eternal punishment if I don’t.
