@therighttothink50 there are 2 parts of this conumdrum. the big industries etc and us individuals. I think as an individual, we need to do our part. Stop waste. period. if it makes me an environmentalist, so be it. I am just not on the level of nuttiness as Greta

If they are conservatives then why not follow the conservative way? Many methods regarding how things were done in the past can be used today to help the environment. Consume less- people in the past would only buy what's necessary, now we have so many artificial needs. Eat less meat, like how people used to because they actually had animals of their own. Eat what's in season. Reuse things, don't throw away, try to fix them first. People used to patch their clothes and pass them to the next generation. We can carry our own things instead of buying single use plastic. Use less water and more environmentally friendly cleaning products. We can't be perfect and of course everybody prefers the easy way instead of inconveniencing ourselves a little bit, but the way middle aged people have gone crazy over policies about plastic bags and straws is beyond me, like did you not pay attention to how your parents used to live before overconsumerism became the norm?

@HannibalAteMeOut Exactly. we are the throwaway society. When good can come out of garbage, it should. We can't drink out water in our state. I have to drink filted water. When i buy bottled for hurricanes, i recycle all of those.

conservation doesn't work very well when a society geared toward cheap disposable import products puts the burden of recycling on the consumer...
we literally manufacture, sell, use, and dispose of plastic quicker than we could ever feasibly recycle & reuse it. And much of it isn't even recyclable.
Of course, it wasn't a problem when we still mostly used paper & metal and didn't buy everything from China...

@wildbill83 what bothers me are appliances. You can't get them fixed. the price of repair costs more than the replacement. that is the sad part.

@wildbill83 i learned the Chinese thing the hard way with TV's. I was told that all TVS were made in China (except for the chips made in Taiwan) but Zenith. i don't even think they are around anymore

All of us doing our part can make a huge difference.
Especially boycotting anything with a high carbon or methane footprint
and not letting rubbish and pollution end up in waterways and oceans.
We can change our lives to be greener one bit at a time.
As each new practise becomes the norm, it turns out to be easy.
For those who can't afford the bigger items like battery backed solar voltaic power and electric bikes and cars,
we still need govt funded initiatives.
Big Business is already starting to transition, so world govts are proving to be the last and biggest stumbling block.
We still do need govt to pass legislation and spend money on infrastructure to create solutions.
I agree that it needs to be non-partisan, not a left-right policy split, but rather both sides realising the costs of doing nothing or too little too slowly will disastrous for everyone.

Conflict is the foundation of storytelling and drama - many people's favourite source of entertainment.
But can be so costly in real life.
I believe there are usually solutions to every problem,
starting from the principle of creative thinking
so that everyone's (all sides) needs are met.
It's sad that our democratic and legal systems favour competition, win-lose, and creativity in dirty tactics.
One the one hand, democracy saves us from the worse problems of civil wars (change by force.)
On the other, it is cumbersome, tends to mediocrity and inefficiency, and often lets minorities suffer as they fall through the gaps.
Yet not all democracies suffer these problems to the same degree, so we could probably learn a lot from others.
I do think we could invent ways to do democracy better.
By the way, I love good chats about meaningful topics.

@Scarfface and for me after having a nice relaxing weekend with my daughters that I have to put up with the troll first thing Monday morning it’s just ridiculous and there’s lots of them on here and I understand it but he just gets under my skin because he’s a clown a clown that’s a troll I could block him, but that’s not the answer ignoring him. That’s the answer just like everybody else does in his life I would take a guess at.

@Scarfface and here’s the big thing I love the outdoors more than most people I’m a hunter I’m a snowmobile or I have a cabin out in the woods. Every chance I get I go there so it’s funny that I’m being called somebody that’s ruining the planet. This guy probably lives in the city and he’s never been on a dirt road went to a creek went fishing Nothing you’re just somebody with a big mouth and nose nothing

I'm very much an environmentalist, however, politicians (and others) make proposals without any plan or strategy because they have no clue. For instance, moving down the road to mandate electric vehicles without a robust enough grid to handle it. Also, some poor slob living paycheck to paycheck isn't going to upgrade their home's 60+ year old electrical. We continue to ignore nuclear and nuclear has advanced where we can build smaller efficient plants using a postage stamp of land compared to wind and solar.
Not that I'm against wind or solar. I think it's a fine [i][b]distributed[/b][/i] system. It would be nice if you could buy solar panels and plug and play them into your existing electrical. Make mandates on electric companies to replace meters with something that make grid tying as easy as hooking up cable TV. @BrewCityBarfly You're the only one saying "proponent." And who cares what Al Gore thinks anyway. He's one voice in a sea of voices albeit one with experience. Like I said. There is no silver bullet and there's REASONS why nuclear isn't as viable a form of energy as others. If we don't look at all sides of an issue then our perspective is usually being driven by emotion. And that's fine when we just want to pop off. But it doesn't fly in the real decision making process. About 20% of our power comes from nuclear. Year to year it's actually going up. But that will change. There's other options that are cleaner, less expensive and without the risks that are being advanced more quickly. That's progress. The strong survive.

sub critical/fast reactors albeit not capable of such large scale production are fairly simple, don't require cooling or control rods, and could easily power most small cities; the entire unit would be smaller than a school bus and could even be buried as they'll run for 10-30 years without maintenance/refueling
it would take a 2,400 acre solar farm to produce the same amount of power as an SMR (not counting some form of energy storage for night hours/times of little to no sunlight
you'd need between 50-100 of the largest commercially available wind turbines for the same power output
Given the constraints and enormous expense of wind & solar, it's sheer madness that the nuclear option is skipped entirely...
Ideally, SMR's could be constructed and buried in close proximity to existing power substations; one one even know they were there. "Renewables" on the other hand take up a lot of space & are quite frankly an eyesore & a blight on the environment they're supposedly "protecting"...
Solar farms are great at roasting birds mid-flight and disrupting air traffic; wind farms generate noise complaints and plummet adjacent property values (they also explode & burn well when subjected to too much wind and the internal braking system fails)

I would love to see the recycling materials used locally to generate more businesses and jobs. Instead of shipping most to China. I have watched videos of people taking aluminum cans and other metal scrap, sorting it out and melting it down. One man in Australia stamps his mark on the bars and is collecting them in a storage area in his home…has hundreds of bars of assorted metals….didn’t say why. But thought what a good way to have something on hand to barter with when the time comes for it.

@akindheart the doctor that stayed here a couple weeks a few years ago was from Sweden and he said they recycle the garbage and burn the burnable trash and use it to generate electricity. He asked why they didn’t do that here. Told him that we have natural gas that is a side product from the oil industry and it’s used in the power plants to generate electricity, probably cheaper than sorting trash and setting up those incinerators.
I would love to see rocket stove technology available for those who want to use it to heat their homes or greenhouses. So much yard type waste could be used in them. Small tree branches, dry weeds, pine cones, dry corn cobs etc. Rocket stoves burn most of the pollutants that a regular wood stove would put into the atmosphere.

@akindheart I’d like to see it used for heating in homes & outbuildings & greenhouses and bypass the electric or gas company. Personalize it and empower people would be a great motivator.

Common sense measures everyone can agree on. Not some unproven sci-fi vision that is not ready for prime time. The markets inherently are smart enough to manage this conversion to green in the most economical and efficient means. When the cost of petro-fuels are no longer competitive to that of green energy the markets will automatically switch in favor or green. One of the best current options for Green Energy is nuclear energy. France has done an amazing job with it. Why can't the US?
