Have you ever been strong enough to change your view on a topic after an internet debate with someone ?

Starsandfire · 31-35, F
Hmm...well, if I'm wrong, I'm wrong. But one of the the reasons I don't enter into public debates regularly with people on forums is because I don't have the time or energy to do enough research to have such strong points of view. I don't like to say anything without knowing exactly what I'm talking about. I do admire people who can debate in an intelligent manner though.

@SW-User not very 🤣

@Starsandfire I never enter into a debate, unless I have the facts, and never bet unless I know that I can't lose.
Starsandfire · 31-35, F
@samueltyler2 that's the way to do it! 😊

yes, sure. part of the fun of talking to others is learning new stuff. its not about having to be right
Only in very small ways. Like I can admit if someone makes a point. I can even see their point of view even without having to agree with them. But big changes in world views I haven't had happen in years and they never came from arguments but instead from introspection.

Strong enough or humble enough?
Somewhat I have
I’ve lost what we’re once very dear friends due to political differences. Crushed me as I wasn’t aware the friendship was founded on politics
@SW-User being humble is one of the biggest character strength anyone can have

@Strawberrry I personally agree
Yes, regularly.

Yes, sure. Had nothing to do with being strong enough. It just has to do with being honest with yourself.
Yes. If I was presented with information that I wasn’t aware of or wrong about.

I don't think so. Maybe some additional information gets baked in to the cake but if a "debate" is taking place I think that's predicated, at least for me, as having a pretty firm position driven by facts or experience. I try to not open my mouth unless I know what I'm talking about. And if I don't I'll try to learn first.
I do it all the time.

The Leftist ideology destroys hearts, minds and souls. The leftist ideology and the people who subscribe to it have nothing to offer me. All their arguments are based on blind emotion rather than cold hard facts. You can look no further than the current damage being done to the world by Biden.

All the evil in the world, all the poverty and all the current misery could for the most part been avoided. Only if we the USA were pumping more oil and we were energy independent like we were under President Trump, we would all be enjoying better lives right now.

The Left's stupidity is pure evil and those who defend it haven't got a clue and aren't worth my time or effort.

@therighttothink50 Glad you've become so open minded now that you're middle aged. 🤣

I am open to changing views about most things. I like hearing people out. Certain topics I will hold strong to my opinion though, but I will still hear what they have to say to try and understand from their POV

My views have changed enormously over the years but never, I think, due to internet 'debates' - or even debates of any kind, which demand 'winning' by using as much colorful rhetoric as one can command; often with scant regard for truth.

Maturing and absorbing what I see & hear around me as well as a slowly developing desire for critical and introspective thinking - these have gradually moved my mindset; adjusted my opinions & prejudices to where they now sit.

It's hard to say this without sounding horribly pompous. Sorry if I haven't managed that.
