How Many Years of College Is Average Before A Student Selects A Major?

amourj · 26-30, M
I selected mine when I started.

@amourj I know someone who is about to finish the third year of college and is clueless about what to major in, has changed her mind at least 4 times…each time because someone she knows has chosen it.

Zero in most of the world. In the UK you specialise at 16, when you apply to university you pick a single course of study. A few supporting courses will be included, for instance if you are studying for an Applied Physics degree then there are compulsory maths courses that are run by the mathematics department.

You have to have a major when you begin. When I started college, I started as a geography major because that department had openings and I was starting late. My father said I could transfer majors the following year, and I did.

THEN I transferred to a different college, began as a graphic design major, and then transferred to print making. I discovered that every single time I transferred I had to start almost all over again, because every department had their own special classes and requirements.

@4meAndyou they don’t have to declare a major when they are in the first year here

Hopefully you already have a plan before you start. The successful students always do

@TexChik it’s not me

@cherokeepatti Sorry ! Let me rephrase. "one" should already have a degree plan ready before they begin their academic career. I think entering college as an "undecided" major is such a mistake . They usually drop out.

@TexChik 3 years and letting a relative pay while she plays

When I was in college, the first two years of engineering school were fairly standard, but you had to decide what type of engineering before the third year. Architecture students had to know from the first day.

I changed majors once. If I could afford it, I'd still be at uni doing as many courses as I could.
nedkelly · 61-69, M
No offence - you are a bid old to be starting college 😁
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@nedkelly it is not me
therighttothink50 · 56-60, M
