So is it better to call in sick, or go to work when you're in so much pain and discomfort that you would be absolutely useless?

I am in so much discomfort and pain right now (period related) that if I go to work I'm just gonna be hunched over at my desk, doing very little, and running to the bathroom every 10 mins to check if I'm bleeding too heavily.

Should I just call in sick? 😔 I hate to let my manager down because she's great, but I really don't feel good.

I think that if you push yourself too much, you'll end up missing more work and become even worse off. I know the feeling of letting your manger down, but going to work sick, you won't be of much help. 😞
As a former manager..... I can tell you that my personal approach to "sick time" was simply to accept it if it fell within the parameters of company policy. IE: you have 30 sick days on the books so if you need/want to call in sick you should...."mental health" days included.

However, if the # of days taken fell OUT of the company policy (IE 40 days), then we would have a conversation about it. Although it never happened to me or my team, I like to think that I am "compassionate" (the first time) and not so compassionate if it happens more than once.

If your company manual has no SICK/PERSONAL/VACATION policies...... shame on them because having it written in the company manual solves a lot of problems down the road...... My belief is that even small companies should have a written policy..... especially in RIGHT TO WORK states.

What job on this planet offers 30 sick days? Is that in a year or...?

Also at my own job, I have heard managers call it "mental health days" as well. Is that a result of differentiating between an employee needing a extra day away from the BS and possibly covid-19? Cause as we know for a while that was the big scare.

TBH the vast majority of my call-offs have been "mental health days".

Many companies have policies that allow you to "accumulate" sick days. IE: if you earn 4 sick days per quarter and you don't use any for a year.... then you have 16 sick days "on the books". As a side note...many companies (and the school district) here limit the amount of sick days you can roll over into a new fiscal year to 59 days.
.....So three weeks before the new fiscal year starts, EVERYONE is calling out sick..... LOL

@Threepio Where I work though we accumulate two sick hours a month. Yeah I work for one of the "fat cats" out there. AKA some greedy corporation that has to keep their noses up the shareholders' asses.

So what did you decide?

One thing - going to work sick or hurt is the worst. I mean work is already depressing, stressful, etc. As soon as we clock in, it is like any ailments suddenly amplify.
Missing work can make one feel like they are cheating but sometimes you just have to call in.

@CestManan I forced myself to go to work yesterday (when I posted this), but today I am calling in. My symptoms have worsened. 😥

@DearAmbellina2113 Sometimes we need a solid day to shake things off.

Don’t go into work if you’re sick, full stop. If you put yourself under strain you’ll only make yourself feel worse
DearAmbellina2113 · 41-45, F
@SW-User I just have so much fear of losing my job if they think I'm missing too many days. Idk how many I've missed so far (probably around 10 days since I started in March) but it's always period-related and once I was out for a week with Covid. I don't want to let my boss down but I also don't want to put myself through unnecessary pain.
Jeephikelove · 51-55, F
That’s a tough one, at least your boss is a woman hopefully understands if you call in sick.
Mind you if your boss was a man he’d just be so uncomfortable about the topic he’d probably say take the whole week off! 😂
DearAmbellina2113 · 41-45, F
@Jeephikelove my boss is a woman but since she has no issues with her menstrual cycles, Idk if she understands how painful this is for me.
Jeephikelove · 51-55, F
@DearAmbellina2113 I totally get that, my uterus/ovaries were trying to kill me and my boss (woman) didn’t understand but she was grumpy and not very nice.

Call in and stay home.
Jenny1234 · 51-55, F
I don’t think it’s normal to feel that badly when you have your period. Have you seen a doctor? Been checked for uterine polyps or fibroids or endometriosis?
DearAmbellina2113 · 41-45, F
@Jenny1234 I have PCOS and endometriosis. Neither are treatable or curable, but even if they were, it doesn't matter because I'm an American and therefore uninsured.
monellla731 · 46-50, M
call out why suffer and not be able to perform your best
monellla731 · 46-50, M
@DearAmbellina2113 why would you lose it??
DearAmbellina2113 · 41-45, F
@monellla731 if they think I'm missing too much or unreliable....
monellla731 · 46-50, M
@DearAmbellina2113 I am sorry
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
I would go to work because otherwise I would have to go to a doctor.
eMortal · M
Go, if the discomfort gets worse you can still come back.

DearAmbellina2113 · 41-45, F

Health first.
DearAmbellina2113 · 41-45, F
@rrraksamam I agree but also don't wanna lose my job.
rrraksamam · 31-35, M
@DearAmbellina2113 Talk to your manager. Tell her what you're experiencing. If she's human, she'll give you the day off

Would Tylenol help?
