As an insulin dependent diabetic people are often really surprised by what I eat and the amount of carbs and sugar I have. Unless you have diabetes you don’t understand how it feels, people telling me what to eat or not eat makes me do the opposite. It’s my body and I know how it feels and what it needs. She’ll have regular reviews where they’ll check her levels and how she is managing - leave it to them to give the diet advice and you just enjoy time with your mum.

@SW-User She needs to visit the doctor and find out a solution. A pump seems like a good idea. The thing is she doesn’t want anything attached to her stomach. I told her today that she needs to start injecting herself before meals. I hope she starts listening.
SW-User
@SW-User she can put the pump on her arms or legs if she prefers, they’re really small and discreet. Maybe they could put her on a slow release then she doesn’t need to remember - I inject first thing in the morning and then before my evening meal…I don’t count carbs and inject the same amount each day, it’s very simple and works for me

That sounds like good treatment. It’s up to her and the doctor. Let’s hope she can get her A1c down as well. @SW-User

My mom does the same thing, she claims the doc said she can eat what she wants, I keep telling her thats not true, at a certain point I just accepted the fact that her life may be cut shorter due to her crazy eating habits.
SW-User
It’s not true. She has to watch the carbs, sugar and portion size. The A1c level will tell if she’s eating like she should or not. If it’s above 6.5 then that’s not good news. @jfox4anr

@SW-User Yeah. i told her that the doctors cant heal her, they can only keep her on meds
SW-User
That’s the truth. It’s best she start eating more salads, vegetables and white meats. @jfox4anr

I am a diabetic type 2.. And i know how hard it is to be disciplined in eating the right foods.. Being a sweet toothed person all your life is like being a sugar addict.. Also i have read your replies in this thread and you say she is under some stress.. A lot of sugar addicts eat more bad foods as a coping strategy when facing stress..
I guess you have clearly expressed your fears to her about the consequences of her bad diet.. In the end that's all you can really do.. I hope she responds better to your concern in the future.. But sadly it's true that some people have to hit rock bottom before they are forced to make a serious change in their lives.. At lest you can live knowing you have said to her what she needed to hear.. Your conscience can be clear on this issue..

I know what you mean. The more sugar I eat, the more I want. It’s a fact that sugar is as addictive as cocaine. You have an advantage because of your age. If she took better care of herself at your age maybe things would be better now. By the time you hit 65 your health turns for the worst. She is under stress and I know that’s hard for her. It’s best to at least watch portions sizes. She can’t really walk that great either from her feet. It’s terrible but I’m hoping if she eats better that will help. @Adstar

Time for you to be the adult. Consult with a medical professional who might be able to advise the best approach with her. Bottom line. She is killing herself and that is the ultimate selfish act. I wish you my best.

Thanks David, I appreciate your thoughtful advice and I’m going to start cooking more. 👍🏼@Grateful4you

@SW-User Big hugs honey! I feel better knowing you're back on track. My former assistant ended up losing one leg and eventually his kidneys failed and he to be on dialysis three time a week at the hospital and eventually dies. Not trying to scare you but this is the reality of what can happen. Be well and we will talk again anytime you want to.
SW-User
@Grateful4you I’m soo sorry about your friend. Oh God, diabetes is a terrible disease. I had a talk with her and I think she is understanding now.
SW-User
Is she on fast acting insulin?
Either way, the best thing to scare her with is articles about kidney failure and what it does to the body. Because high blood sugar will eventually lead to that.

Yeah it's a weird rebellious thing.

Is she on Metformin and/or Insulin?
SW-User
Yes I know and she’s eating worse and worse. When she first became diabetic she was on a diet and exercise regimen that lowered her A1c to a 4.0. The doctor told her she doesn’t have to lose more weight so what did she do?? She thought the doctor meant eat like you used to and your diabetes is gone. She went back to eating a lot of carbs and sugar then her diabetes got worse and worse. @Ontheroad

@SW-User She absolutely needs counseling from at least her doctor, a nutritionist and probably a psychologist. The unfortunate part is that nobody but your mom can do anything about it. Don't give up on her though. If you have to nag, do it until she gets counseling and starts taking care of herself. You will be saving her life.
SW-User
I myself need a nutritionist because I have been gaining some weight lately but I never give up on my health. I’ll try to talk to her. I always tell her that she needs to eat healthier. She gets weird cravings and then eats mindlessly. She chooses the worst foods for diabetics. She will eat sweets laced with syrup and thick white bread. She doesn’t even like wheat bread. She needs to start training herself to like healthier options. @Ontheroad
