What was the emotional side of things like for you when you started a diet?

After some time of comfort eating and realising you can no longer fit into your clothes.
What happened?did you instantly start a diet?
Coax yourself on to one, then relapse?
Did you find it really hard no longer having any of those food of choice for comfort?

How long did you stay on the diet?
And how long if you did, did you keep the weight off?

I got a little sad and upset with myself, but I've always had a solution-oriented approach to life and started hammering out a plan to stop it. The diets were fraught with relapses, but so far I've lost over 40 lbs. in the last year and can give myself a little more leeway now that I'm getting results.

The important thing is to focus on small milestones rather than trying to lose it all at once. It's going to be a process with a slow start, so starting small helps keep you motivated and targets achievable. You find it easier to relax a little once you hit that first target and then could refocus to reach the next small milestone. It adds up over time

@TinyViolins I hear you...
Compassion and motivation is needed in abundance

@Mellowgirl Motivation follows a feedback loop. Once you get the wheel turning, it's easier to keep going than it is to stop.

It's simple brain chemistry. Dopamine is released not when you're ready to start, but once you've already started in order to keep you going. It rewards achievement, and taking the first steps is an achievement on its own. That's why it's important to keep goals small. If you don't achieve what you want right away, it's going to make you lose your resolve

It's never instant, it's little casual changes over time and often the effect is only mental. (Choosing not to have a chocolate bar one day to 'be healthy', but eating no fruit or doing no exercise alongside it).

I have too many clothes in sizes from 12 (ha!) to 20, I am quite matter of fact about sizing up as I got bigger. I have some elements of denial when I see photos of myself at my biggest, I am ashamed and embarrassed and don't see how it could possibly be me...

This year I have had a good go at healthy eating (rather than dieting) and lost weight almost as a side effect, I am happier about that and being in a better mental place is helpful for not falling in to bad habits or comfort foods. The lighter times of the year count for a lot too, I have SAD and the dark autumn and winter months massively affect my food intake and mood.

@helsbels being bigger gave me a reality check. Some men would be in appropriate in regards to my body when I was slim but the more voluptuous I got its almost like they just couldn't control themselves.
I became a piece of meat and I couldn't even hide it.
I had females try and make me feel a way because I wasn't as confident.
I had some people make me feel like I was no longer relevant.
All I can say is that on top of my hormonal issues was not fun...!

I gained a lot of weight within 10 years and when I got sexually harassed by a disgusting vet at work I it was a sign that it's about time for me to loose weight. I also got laughed at when I bought support from my peers but I should've known. You do get sexualized a lot when you gain a lot of weight.

If I no longer fit into my clothes, I put them off and buy new ones. Although, I tend to have an opposite problem as an adult. Everything started hanging on me.
Mellowgirl · 31-35, F
@CrazyMusicLover I would say your lucky but it's a problem at both ends of the spectrum...
I hope you're able to manage it x
