Do you know know Atatürk? What do you think of him?

I believe he was a decent person and he knew what he was doing. I also really believe in his secular vision I wish it happened in my home country too. He also totally believed in democracy.

I'm relatively uninformed about him, but from what I understand, he had a very authoritarian secular, progressive movement. I don't love authoritarianism in theory, but I'd probably be the same way if I lived in a country that struggled to stave off religious fundamentalism.
@BlueVeins The most important thing he did was to let religion be in it's own space and not interfere with anything else politics wise. I don't know a whole lot about him either but I been reading stuff about him for years.

Mustafa Kemal wasn’t even an ottoman
@AthrillatheHunt That's the point. He built a decent country from the Ottoman ruins.

@PiecingBabyFaceTogether my grandfather from Albania fought in the ottoman army in WWI.
The ottomans ruled like the Roman’s:
Anyone in the empire could be a ruler.
I think Ataturk was Bosnian.
@AthrillatheHunt Mohamed Ali who built modern Egypt was Albanian and he later fought against the Ottomans and gained independence from them but later his grand son ruined everything and the Ottomans regained control of Egypt.
He was the Armenian genocide fella right?
@Ozymandiaz Those were the Ottomans before him.

Piece of shit who was responsible for continuing the Genocide of the Armenians, Assyrians and Greeks with the burning of Smyrna. He was also responsible for forced assimilation of minorities and the massacre of the Dersim Kurds.

He was no believer in democracy, he had his opponents silenced and effectively had a one party state.

He starved a war with Armenia that was already ravished through genocide, to steal the lands where Armenians are indigenous. There was never an Agri in history, only Ararat.

Ազատություն կամ Մահ։
@basilfawlty89 He came in power in 1923 man 4 years after ww1. You need to check your dates. I would never support a mass murderer I'm not that naive the Armenian genocide was fron 1915 to 17 totally during Ottomans.
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
@PiecingBabyFaceTogether nope, the Turkish "War of Independence" was thanks to him, not to mention the Burning of Smyrna happened in 1922. The massacre of the Dersim was 1933.

He merely continued Ottoman policy. The only difference is instead of a Pan-Turkic nationalism like the Ottomans, he encouraged Anatolian Turk ultranationalism.
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
@PiecingBabyFaceTogether see above regarding the Turkish War of Independence. He led the forces, he was responsible for the Burning of Smyrna. He was responsible for the harsh taxes against Armenians, Jews and Greeks. He was responsible for banning the use of non-Turkish languages in the public sphere. Hell, even innocuous sounding things like the name for apricot in Latin (prunus armenicus) was changed because it "threatened Turkish cohesion".

I know who he is, but I'm just not very familiar with his history

No clue but I want to visit turkey so bad. The ottoman empire seems interesting af! my great grandparents left the ottoman empire and were called Turks when they got to Latin America. Even though they were Lebanese. That's all I know about that time period.
@empanadas They ruled the entire Mideast till they were crushed during ww1. Atatürk basically rebuilt the country after all the destruction. The Ottomans weren't exactly good people.
empanadas · 31-35, M
@PiecingBabyFaceTogether interesting, I would hear stories of how messed up the ottoman were. Especially with the slaves and how they would cut the men's genitalia off. I can only imagine what they did to the people they conquered.
@empanadas Yes they weren't even nice to each other. 100s of royal family members killed each other over the years. One of them slaughtered his 21 brothers once he got into power. It was a shit show. Many killed their fathers and fathers killed their sons etc.
