My first real mentor at work used to tell me this story

It was his attempt to help me navigate workplace politics. Basically both a scorpion and a frog need to cross a river one day. The scorpion offers to give the frog a lift over. The frog agrees, only to find the scorpion stings them when halfway across the river drowning them both. When the frog asks why the scorpion says because it’s in my nature.

The only thing is I’m terrible at telling who the scorpions are. Which I guess was his point.

It's an oldie but a goodie...i think trust, get verify is a good answer... There's always someone who will climb over you to get to the top.

@Convivial It’s a tricky balance because you need to find your people and sometimes you get it wrong. He is someone I can always trust thankfully but it took many years for me to get to that point.
