Weird job hiring process sketchy job.

I applied at this one place they are a local small business they are only offering $13 an hr in 2021 in California I decided to come in yesterday from 1-5 but it all seemed sketchy to me I'm not even on the payroll yet, I have no official hire date to start, no w4 or i9 forms to sign no one has looked at my i.d or social, they want me to come back today and throw me onto a day's work but, I'm not even getting paid yet, I'm not officially hired I was told that depending on my speed of how fast I can work that they'll decide if they give me a call back to get hired or not? I find it all sketchy I've never gone through this type of "hiring process" before it's just weird. Like oh, you want to use me to work for a day or two then you might not even call me back? Seems sketchy af to me.

While it does feel a bit sketchy, I think it's along the lines of "We want to see how you work before we make a decision." Some tech firms that I applied to did the same to me, but it wasn't a full day. It was just showing what I could do for my position.

@SW-User This job is a low pay production work job where you're having to make desserts in a fast paced environment it's not worth it to me coming in for 8 hrs with no guaranteed pay or hire process it's just sketchy.

@Rambler I was told if I wanted my payment there but, then they started speaking in their language and said that they'd decide if they'll keep me or not and if I wanted to comeback today.
