I relate with the family stuff you mentioned.
For me as an agnostic, believing that when I die I will be gone for good is so comforting. As for people who care about me, I doubt that they will experience it like that. The notion of an afterlife creates a continuing bond after the loss. Many people find comfort in this bond. Whatever helps my loved ones when I’m gone, I want them to hold on to it
