I Am An Introvert

I am a cashier. I got my annual review at work yesterday and I was told I have to be friendly and smile more for my customers. I do plenty of that, it's just that because I'm so quiet, I only greet, ask how they are, and make sure they found everything ok. Then I tell them to have a nice day, all with a smile and positive attitude. What the review actually means, in my opinion, is that I need to strike a conversation like the rest of the cashiers. I suck at those! I wanted to laugh so hard the moment I heard this part of my review! Somehow I kept a straight face.

Strike a conversation? When you got a line-up? I don't get it. That's not even efficient. What kind of store is it? If you want to make a conversation, maybe you can congratulate the customer for the choice they have made. For example, "That's a beautiful item, and the price is very low". I am an introvert too and I have been a cashier for many years. I was suffering because I was supposed to make the customer use the company credit card or the rewards card. It was embarassing.

Yeah, I have to sell the company card to customers, as well. Cashiers have to converse about anything. The goal is to make the customer feel comfortable like a "guest" and have them leave with a positive impression of the company's store. I don't think that is necessary all the time as long as I am polite to them and do my job fast and efficiently.

I don't want to have conversations with cashiers. As long as you're courteous, that's all that should be required. I find it annoying when cashiers comment on what I'm buying or ask me too many questions. Just "hello" and "have a nice day" are all I want to hear in the way of conversation. I like to keep it minimal.
You're doing okay. If I went into your store, I'd be sure to get in your line. :)
Take care.

Reviews are not fun I agree. They have to find some category for you to improve upon. You will never get a perfect score. Wait until they demand goal setting. I absolutely HATE this process !!!!

Now I'm dreading it.

It's not a death sentence. You will live to see tomorrow and still have a job. One that comes with a paycheck. I don't. Just know there will be criticism. Be strong and don't argue. Don't blame others. A few days and it's forgotten. Whoever gives the review hates it also!!

As an introvert myself I appreciate the cashiers who just ask the minimal and let me be. Unfortunately we introverts are the minority and extroverts just don't understand us.

If you wanted to try to strike up a conversation you could ask them what they're making or something...
