I Think About Area 51

This story is about where I live and a brief sketch of the people who live there with me...and my new "roommate," who is not really there at all.

I call her Area 51 because, officially, she is not there.

I live in a rooming house with a manager and 5 people who rent rooms. It's a very nice house with a pool in a fairly rich neighborhood.

Across the hall from me is my roommate whom I'll call Larry. Down the hall is my other downstairs roommate whom I'll call Kerry. I am an old lady and I am the only woman in the house...except for Area 51.

Upstairs is the manager, a guy who is Larry's younger brother and a grouchy old guy who glares at everyone whenever he gets a chance; he's a retired military man and he probably took out the enemy just by looking at them.

A couple of weeks ago it appears Larry moved his girlfriend in. The rule here is one to a room. I get the impression it's a temporary thing, like maybe she is saving to get her own place. However, with the housing shortage as it is, this might take a while.

She is very quiet. She never comes out of Larry's room except at dawn and then comes back into the house late at night, dodging the vigilance of the manager. In fact, I wouldn't even know she was here at all except for the bathroom. She spends lots of time in there; she's big on hygiene and hairdos.
She uses my side of the sink. That doesn't bother me. It's the fact that, as an old lady with a bad bladder, it can be tough waiting for my usual 10 times a day bathroom calls.

Anyway, I guess this a pretty boring story. But some people on here might be curious about my living arrangements out here in the southern California desert.

By the way, I actually have been to the real Area 51 on the Nellis Test Site out in the Nevada desert. It's of much greater interest to people here than my rooming house or roommates, I'm sure.

Of course, not having a top secret clearance, I've never actually been inside the base itself, only done some sky watching around Rachel, Nevada. And I once spent 3 days camped out at the Little Ale Inn in Rachel for their annual UFO Friendship campout.

Meanwhile, I live with my bladder problems, my roommates who are mostly ex-cons from the federal prison system, and...Area 51 who is, officially, not there.

What a great story! You're a novelist in the making! Seriously!

But if you want better living arrangements, mebbe you should visit A51 and let the nice men in white Suburbans take care of you. I hear the lodgings are stellar..if you can avoid getting shot 'n stuff. 馃槉

@Theseus Thank you! You made my day, possibly my whole week. Seriously!

I have been writing for most of my life, and I am now thinking of attempting to self publish over the Internet. I've written several non-fiction books that are currently sitting in boxes in my closet.

If you want to know more about my bizarre background and deeply troubled life, you can read my Featured story under my Profile if you scroll down. I hope you do.

Thanks again for brightening my morning.
