I Care About Personality Not Looks

I have been thinking lately that I could be replaced by any other teacher doing my job, and nobody would notice the difference. And if I think about the cashier in the supermarket, or the driver in the bus where I am writing this, it would be like that too. Is this progress, being so easily replaceable? Is this really a good thing, being just cogs in the machinery? I don't think so.

Personality must be our resistance. Showing who we are doing our work. Not being workers. Being Mr.X or Mrs.Y at work.

I don't think teachers can ever be replaced by robots. I correct myself. It should be 'I don't think good teachers can ever be replaced by robots'. If a teacher's job is simply to follow a lesson plan, go into class and deliver the plan, come out and grade pupils' assignments, then maybe a robot can do that better and more efficiently.

But for a teacher who sees teaching as an extension of himself or herself, I don't think this can be replicated by a machine. More and more, we see automation at work. But it is my firm belief that one who gives his unique self at work can never be replaced.

It is true that as society progresses, there is greater mass production of ideas and even teaching methods. All that hype about 'learning styles' or 'thinking protocols' or ' cooperative learning'. It is the teacher who makes classes come alive for learners, not methods or plans.

And teachers have feelings. If we ignore the teacher as a human, everything goes down the gutter.

You are a great teacher and you know you can never be replaced. Anyone who tries to do that will find they have huge shoes to fill. And they cannot do it.

@Cierzo: yes. Exactly. It has to start with the leaders. I don't know about elsewhere but where I am, I feel people are passive, just clocking the hours and not thinking much or voicing much.

I enjoy working with leaders who dares to put a personal stamp on school policies, according to their beliefs of how education should be done, not some compliant follower who takes ministry instruction and parrots some propaganda words. It makes a great difference to the work environment.

@novembermoon: So true. Of course it is easier to be the compliant servant just following orders from above. Those leaders you talk about are rare. First concern is to avoid trouble

@Cierzo: yes. Sad but true. We see it every day.

I believe passion is the one that makes the difference. Personality is important up to a point but it's pretty influenced by external factors since we are kids.
With love for what you do, you put the best of yourself yes or yes.

Cierzo! I was having the same thoughts just this week. I voiced what I thought to the heads of the department telling them that customer service is falling with their desires to operate only by rules and procedures favoring speed over a truly enjoyable customer experience.
It shouldnt always about protocol and measuring the quantity of a persons work. Quality in the way you make a customer feel during their experience is more important sometimes and may not be able to be measured initially.

Too many rules and procedures and too little human touch 😞
Unsatisfiedstace · 51-55, F
@Cierzo: yes. Exactly. Not everyone needs or understand that.

Being replaced, and being replaced by a capable person, are two different things.

So when people protest Trump, they're not saying that Obama is irreplaceable.

I was strategic in choosing my line of work in a field with a skill shortage.

Good choice!

i won't be bothered by being easily replaceable at work. companies can always find people who satisfy the criteria they list for the jobs. but everyone is unique not defined by their occupation. you have other jobs and responsibilities other than your occupation.
Sssslm · F
@Cierzo: because you do it for the benefit of the society, not just for proving to yourself.
Cierzo · M
@Sssslm: I see your point, but my work is a way to express myself too. I devote time, thoughts, and efforts that I could use in a different ways. I do my work for the benefit of the society, or at least I want to believe it is so, but at the same time it is my work.

We are cells, society is a body. Cells die, another ones take their place. But when this happen, the body is not exactly the same. The body haa gotten older. We are not totally replaceablem

@Cierzo: i used to have this thinking too, confirmed by my recognition of how minimal i was after changing jobs for 3 times. though my workload was equal to several other people s workload, no bosses ever asked me to stay; in their mind, they probably thought the work i was doing was really trivial, anyone could do it, or even if no one was going to do it, it probably didn't matter as they would have other ways to tackle them.

i realize if i try to look for direction and answer from/within myself or anyone (like my boss, or parents or frds) it s never going to work. i start to look for answers from religion, knowing that i m minimal but unique and valuable at the same time. it s a transformation to shift the centre away from oneself while knowing one's self worth and be comfortable with it.
