Who remembers the dreaded school cross country? Often on a cold January afternoon wading barefoot through the deep thick slippery mud! Oh those were the days.
Yes, usually on the coldest and wettest days of the year! We were sent out wearing little white vests and gym knickers, with our feet bare, while our teachers wore coats and Wellington boots so they could cope with the mud!

@lcclinton4 Sounds just like my school, 30 plus teen girls shivering in our vests, knickers and bare feet
We did cross country just once a year, thank goodness. Not in bare feet, because the course we took is rocky. We would come back covered in mud and frozen - I remember struggling to untie my laces or the buttons on my shirt. Then all of us girls would huddle for sheer relief in the showers, which were probably lukewarm, but were blissful to our shivering bodies 😟
I remember starting a cross country with Galoshes on and ending the run barefoot. Many years ago now. I loved cross country, it was myself against my poor breathing.
@FriendlyAmber Doesn’t hurt, our course was always across fields and mud with a stream thrown in for fun. Running barefoot was actually better as you could grip with your toes and you had no plimsolls to wash or loose!
