I Like to Read

Where Have All The Readers Gone?... I am currently 20 years old, and it shocks me to see how few people of my age read. They all prefer watching TV and movies. Then we wonder why young people today struggle to read. They don't get any practice. Schools are supposed to see this problem and do something about it. Not only do the youth of today struggle to read, but they lack creative thought. I used to help my English teacher go through the essays of my class, and it stunned me. My generation is mostly illiterate, yet they pass public school.

I am lucky, in the sense that my mother instilled a love for reading within me at a young age. But what of the rest? We need to get young people to start reading again. It can only benefit them.

I think mostly it's parents' business to get their children to read books, the younger the better.
Because for example I didn't like school program, I didn't like classical literature, and I was unlucky to have rather dull literature teachers, as a result I haven't read most of the books I was supposed to and even now I don't want to do it. And all of it because of the inability of my teachers to make their subject interesting.
But I do like fantasy, good detective stories, different novels and now having bought a Kindle I read even more than before :)

I got a kindle too. I thought I would hate it and still read physical books, but I'm obsessed.

I didn't want to buy it either, it was a present from my bf, and a very useful one.

When I was young my mom used to read to us every afternoon. And not just kids books, books she liked as well, although ones she thought we would find interesting still. Before I started kindergarten I had already heard the little house on the prairie series, the lord of the rings, etc. I love to read and I think in large part that was due to my mom. I plan to do the same with my kids.

I'm 22. Used to hate reading for most of high school, but now I love it. Someone pushed me to read a certain book, and I fell in love with books. That was when I was 18. I still love my movies and tv though. But I agree with you. And they are missing out.

If you used to dislike reading, and learned how to love it at 18, it must mean that you don't have to be taught to like reading from a young age. So, there might be hope yet for all the others. Maybe they can also learn to like reading, if they give it a chance. Its just such a negative mindset that people associate reading with. I remember my classmates used to associate reading with work and homework, thus they'd never give it a proper chance.
