I Love the Outdoors and Nature

A funny story about the Northern Lights

I have never seen the Northern Lights, although I have tried a few times. On one occasion, on a night that was supposed to be favorable for seeing then, I drove out into the country, pulled to the side of the road in utter darkness, and got out and looked to the sky.

Nothing.

Eventually, a sheriff's car pulled up. He got out to ask if I needed help, and I explained what I was doing. That got him to tell me the following story.

When he was attending college in Duluth Minnesota (a high-latitude location) he was dating a woman from California. She had never heard of the northern lights. So, he offered to take her out to see them one evening. Her reaction was one of pure skepticism. She figured this was one more lame excuse men come up with for getting a woman to agree to "park" with them in the dark!

He eventually convinced her, and yes they saw them, and yes she was embarrassed!
😂😂 Reminded me of my college boyfriend going home with me for Thanksgiving break to my 'hometown' which consisted of our house, the church and the Grange Hall, outside of the REAL town which boasted about 6000 people. (He was from New York).

One evening I asked him if he wanted to go deer-spotting (our chief form of dark-time entertainment), and he was enthused.

He became puzzled when I handed him warm gloves, a scarf and a hat (Pennsylvania Novembers can be cold, and you have to lower the windows for the spotlight). He was thoroughly baffled when I invited my parents and they accepted!

Later, he told me, "I thought it was like submarine races!"

@Mamapolo2016 As a former New Yorker myself, I can relate! 😄

I live at 53 degrees north and I see the northern lights on a regular basis. One night I was out in the wilderness and actually heard them. It was a dead calm night but it sounded like rustling grass. The display was spectacular though. Multi color dancing and shimmering and coalescing and exploding.
