I Like to Play Video Games

VIDEO GAME REVIEW - FALLOUT 76

While the game has a great look, functions smoothly, and finally gets us out of God damned New England - it's got a couple of problems.
Actually, the problems are not with the game, but with the misinformation that Bethesda games gave to retailers to then disseminate to the consumer. I like video games, but I'm old, so I do research before running out to drop $65 bucks on a stupid amusement.

I am not your standard video game player. I'm old, do not want to play online games or with other players. and very often turn the sound off altogether on the game I am playing.

FIRST, Bethesda told us, "If you pre-order the game you can play the BETA before the actual game is available!" OOPS, the BETA is only available on every second Saturday at a 6 minute window in an undisclosed time zone. Sorry, you pre-ordered, but no game for you!

THEN, Bethesda said, "Yes, it's an online game, but only because it's such a vast "world" to explore. There will be other players visible, but there is a setting to turn off any interaction between them and you if you wish solo play" SO, I had to change the setting on my xbox to allow multi-player games before the game would even start. THEN, 12 minutes into playing the game, another user runs up and kills me with an axe. We were assured that any settlements we build, any items we find, even our characters; would all be "safe" from attack/theft/etc from other players.

Oh, Bethesda; you got some 'splaining to do.
(And then, just to twist that knife, when I go to return the game (having it less than 24 hours and playing less than 1 hour), will I get my $65 back? Nope, sorry, $25 credit is all we can offer.

I doubt seriously I will ever purchase another Bethesda game title.

Not commenting on Fallout 76 because I am not a fan of multiplayer online games, but did you not play New Vegas? It wasn't in New England, but then if we want to quibble over semantics, neither is D.C.

@Laifu Or California :-p

@Lucia lol. Good point.

@Laifu True, but if we want to toss in an unnecessary amount of logic; Boston, being so close to DC, in the event of a nuclear war would actually be part of the "glowing sea"

Thanks for sharing your experience - I was considering buying Fallout 76, but the fact that it's not on Steam, and that it's an online only multiplayer game, have made me reluctant fork out the money. Now I'm glad that I held off.

@VeronicaPrincess Personal recommendation from Gamestop manager was Red Red Redemption II. Definitely single player, but with online player capability.

You can't blame Bethesda for the store return policy though.

@Lucia No, what I blame Bethesda for is lying to the retailer so that misinformation (re: LIES) were given out to the public prior to purchase. I asked specifically about all of these things. Not one of the responses I received was accurate.

@xixgun Oh well. I'd file a complaint with Bethesda directly then. Also the first two games are way better than any of the modern fallout games. All single player, incredible story and pretty difficult. But they are from around 1998.

If you didn't want to play online games then why did you get this one? This is an online game.
I knew 76 was going to be a trainwreck.
But thanks for the review.
xixgun · M
@DDonde Because they didn't offer it in any other format.

@xixgun I guess what I meant was that if you were looking for a good single player Fallout experience, this wasn't going to be one. It's unfortunate that they (Bethesda) tried to spin it as being viable as a single player game.
xixgun · M
@DDonde I concur.
