I Have Anxiety

Do you think "I have anxiety" is thrown around too much these days?

While I'm not invalidating these people's feelings, severe anxiety is really, really nasty, I've had it for years, medicated on and off. I suppose it's like someone saying "I'm depressed" when in fact they're just having a bad day. It doesn't bother me too much, I just think that sometimes greater care should be taken when defining a feeling or state of mind. 🤷

Yeah, I think some people do throw it around, like they do with various other mental illnesses.

I think they're just jumping to conclusions and haven't actually been diagnosed, nor psychoanalysed themselves.

@JupiterDreams and some people (or so I've heard) think saying they have a mental illness makes them cool or interesting.

Some people can’t hack life and need an excuse to get out things. For some people it’s truly Debilitating.

Blame Oprah. Before her, people just felt off, felt blue, were having a bad day. After her, "we're experiencing anxiety" - make it sound worse to get more attention (and sympathy)

(Again, not to make light of those with real maladies, but now it seems everyone has something.)

@xixgun ah, it was Oprah. I should have known!! 😆

I think anxiety affects people in ways they aren’t willing to admit.

They don’t know it’s the fear driving them to be mean or make irrational decisions.

Some people are on meds for anxiety, and others have yet to be diagnosed. I don't play with anxiety. It's hell.

@uncalled4 yes it is. I've been on and off antidepressants, tried natural remedies, had some therapy. The only thing that takes the edge off isn't legal where I live 🤦‍♀️ but yeah, it's not be played with
