I come from a long line of diabetics so I completely hear ya on the alcohol part. Although 1-2oz of wine at night has been known to control a high fasting number it isn't recommended.
I would suggest however 1/2 cup of cinnamon tea at bed time, it helps with circulation, and cinnamon is great at controlling blood sugars as well...
